Nominating justices to the United States Supreme Court is one of the most important responsibilities the Constitution bestows upon the president of the United States. President Trump knows this, and has clearly taken this charge very seriously.
Last year, President Trump made an outstanding choice in nominating Neil Gorsuch to the United States Supreme Court. This week, he again put forward an impressive nominee in Judge Brett Kavanaugh.
Judge Kavanaugh himself declared his judicial philosophy to be straightforward: “A judge must be independent and must interpret the law, not make the law.” He is committed to applying our nation’s laws as written and will interpret the Constitution based on its original text and meaning.
A former clerk for Justice Anthony Kennedy, Judge Kavanaugh is an excellent jurist with over 300 published opinions. More than 50 circuit court opinions cite one of his concurrences or dissents, and the Supreme Court has endorsed his opinions more than a dozen times.
Judge Kavanaugh has dedicated his life to public service, serving in various roles in the executive branch under President George W. Bush and later on the bench of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.
Judge Kavanaugh is widely respected within liberal and conservative circles alike. A liberal law professor at Yale Law School recently wrote, “It is hard to name anyone with judicial credentials as strong as those of Judge Kavanaugh.”
Even with Judge Kavanaugh’s outstanding qualifications and acclimations that transcend party lines, Democrats are hysterically opposing him. In fact, some Democrats promised to vote against the nominee before Judge Kavanaugh was even officially nominated. That kind of blind partisanship is exactly what the American people find unacceptable.
In 2006, he was confirmed to the D.C. Circuit Court. In that confirmation, he faced unmerited accusations to which he responded, “There is one kind of judge…an independent judge under our Constitution.”
Judge Kavanaugh is an independent judge, and the kind of judge we need to fill this critical open seat on the United States Supreme Court.
