WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) today announced a $2,766,234 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS)’s Regional Conservation Partnerships Program. The grant, awarded to the Cheyenne County Conservation District, will support the water compact between Kansas and Colorado.

“Kansans understand the importance of Ogallala Aquifer’s conservation to their livelihoods, communities and long-term success,” said Sen. Moran. “I’m pleased this grant further supports a partnership that is committed to sustainable solutions that will protect this natural resource for future generations.”

The grant will help with tree removal to restore surface and ground water flow, help recharge the aquifer, improve the health of the river stream and wildlife habitat, control encroachment of Salt Cedars and Russian Olives and control the risk of wildfires. It will also support updating watering facilities for rangeland.

Last November, then USDA NRCS Acting Chief Kevin Norton joined Sen. Moran’s 15th Annual Conservation Tour to learn more about conservation efforts across Kansas, including the partnerships aimed at providing sustainable solutions for the Ogallala Aquifer.
