Senator Blackburn Introduces Bill To Stop The IRS From Bankrupting American Businesses

September 28, 2022

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The IRS recently received $80 billion in funding from the “Inflation Reduction Act” to hire 87,000 IRS agents, which analysis shows will increase inflation. In response, U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) introduced the IRS User Fee Reduction Act to stop the IRS from charging small businesses exorbitant user fees.

Since Joe Biden took office, prices have risen 13.2 percent. In the Volunteer State, Biden's inflation will cost Tennesseans an extra $7,386 over the next year. This legislation will help businesses get the support they need from the IRS by lowering user fees for businesses with less than $5,000,000 in gross income by 95%.

“White House and Congressional Democrats want to weaponize the IRS by giving them billions of dollars, authorizing thousands of new agents, and allowing them to raise user fees for small businesses,” said Senator Blackburn. “This legislation prevents this massive overreach by ensuring that American businesses are not buried under exorbitant user fees – especially when they are already struggling to stay afloat in Joe Biden’s failing economy.”

BACKGROUND:

  • The IRS is allowed to charge user fees to ensure that the businesses and citizens using their services do not place a financial strain on the agency.

  • Instead of keeping fees low to ensure businesses receive the help they need, the IRS has consistently increased these fees over the last decade.

  • These skyrocketing fees have resulted in businesses shying away from working with the IRS to obtain the information they need to be tax compliant.
