Maryland sets new same-day voter registration records
The 2020 general election set records for same-day registration, the Maryland State Board of Elections announced Friday.
During early voting this year, 12,728 Marylanders took advantage of same-day registration, up from the previous early voting high of 7,884 during the 2016 general election.
On Election Day, 13,575 people registered in this year's general election, which is an increase from 1,042 in the 2020 primary election.
In all, 26,303 Marylanders took part in same-day registration during the 2020 general election, up from the previous total of 7,884 in the 2016 general election in which same-day registration on Election Day was not available.
A total of 7,311 Marylanders took advantage of same-day address changes in the 2020 general election, second only to the 2016 general election, when 8,055 voters changed their addresses.
Also Friday, the SBE released new numbers in the count of mail-in ballots. As of Thursday, 608,691 mail-in ballots remain to be counted. That's out of more than 1.5 million mail-in ballots received by local boards of election. More than 1.6 million mail-in ballots were sent to voters in the 2020 general election.
