Cardin Statement on Police Reform Negotiations

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), lead Senate author of the End Racial and Religious Profiling Act and the Law Enforcement Trust and Integrity Act, both of which are part of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act approved by the House of Representatives, issued the following statement.

“I am disappointed that lengthy bipartisan negotiations on police reform have failed to reach a resolution. It is imperative that Congress take action to restore the community’s trust in our law enforcement officers. We should debate and pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. While Congress works through this process, I would encourage the Biden administration, including the Justice Department, to examine further steps it can take to stamp out discriminatory policing, improve officer training and use of force standards, and help change our law enforcement mentality from a warrior to guardian approach. Partisan gridlock will not keep communities safe or rebuild trust in law enforcement. We must act.”
