Manchin, Capito and McKinley Applaud New Jobs In West Virginia

Washington, DC – Today, U.S. Senators Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) and Representative David McKinley (R-WV) announced Mason County, West Virginia will be home to Nucor’s new multi-billion dollar steel mill facility. The facility will create thousands of new direct and indirect jobs and will be responsible for significant additional opportunities and investments in the region. Nucor will also make significant philanthropic investments in community organizations in Mason County and the entire state.

“Today’s announcement is a wonderful way to start the New Year and truly shows that when you put politics aside and come together in a bipartisan way, great things happen. Nucor will be making Mason County the new home of their state-of-the-art steel mill that will employ West Virginians in good-paying, long-term jobs. And Nucor is committed to investing time and resources into our state, communities and their workers. The significant investments made through the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act have made West Virginia an even more attractive location to organizations like Nucor and as a result we will continue to attract exciting economic development investments of this magnitude that are transformative for the region and our people. I will continue to work with Nucor, their leadership team and state and federal agencies to help Nucor grow their company here in the Mountain State. I would like to thank Nucor CEO Leon Topalian, the leadership team and the board of directors for choosing West Virginia. I always say that West Virginians are some of the hardest working people you’ll ever meet, and I know our state is ready to prove ourselves to Nucor and the entire steel industry. This announcement shows Nucor truly values our state’s best asset: our people,” said Senator Manchin.

“One of the ways we can make West Virginia a more attractive place for businesses to grow and thrive is by making sure we have the tools needed to compete with the economic incentives other states across the country are offering. Today’s announcement that Nucor will be establishing roots in Mason County is proof that West Virginia can deliver this type of environment. At the federal level, we stepped forward and delivered a bipartisan infrastructure package, which is now law, that will help address our nation’s core infrastructure challenges. But, materials are needed to deliver these solutions. Nucor’s investment means we will not only be able to manufacture these needed materials, but we will also be able to manufacture them right here in West Virginia. I’m so proud of this announcement for many reasons, but primarily because it shows what we can achieve when we work together at the federal, state, and local levels for solid, long term success. I thank Governor Justice and his administration for their hard work to help make this major economic development announcement possible,” Senator Capito said.

“We are proud that Nucor has chosen West Virginia for this major investment,” said Rep. McKinley. “This is exciting news for Mason County and the entire state, and the jobs associated with the plant will provide opportunities for thousands of West Virginians. Good roads, access to water and sewer, and a reliable and fast internet connection are all important factors when companies choose a location. That is why prioritizing our state’s infrastructure is essential and will pay off with long-term investments like the one Nucor is making.”

“We are incredibly excited to be building this new sheet mill in West Virginia and welcoming the communities in Mason County and the surrounding area into the Nucor family. I would like to thank Senators Manchin and Capito and Representative McKinley, not only for their support of this project, but also for the bipartisan leadership they recently showed in passing the much-needed federal infrastructure legislation late last year. The bill provides much needed new funding for roads and bridges and other critical infrastructure and it ensures this infrastructure will be built using steel and steel products made here at home by an American workforce,” said Leon Topalian, President and Chief Executive Officer of Nucor Corporation.

Background information on the Nucor steel mill:

The new Nucor steel sheet mill in Mason County is a $2.7 billion investment. The mill will have the capacity to produce 3 million tons of steel sheet annually and will employ approximately 800 full-time employees after it begins commercial operations. In addition, approximately 1,000 temporary construction jobs will be created during the building of the steel mill, which is estimated to take 2 years.

The new mill will be one of the most technologically advanced sheet mills and will also have one of the lowest carbon footprints of any sheet mill in the world. The new mill will have advanced steelmaking capabilities, including a high-end automotive galvanizing line and construction-grade line that will allow Nucor to further grow sales of value-added products into these two important end-use markets for sheet steel.

Nucor Corporation, based in Charlotte, North Carolina, is the largest steel producer in the U.S. and the largest recycler of any material in North America. The company operates 25 steel mills that produce approximately one-quarter of America’s raw steel using scrap metal as its primary raw material, and more than 250 facilities that produce raw materials or finished steel products for non-residential construction, infrastructure, automotive, heavy equipment, renewable energy and other applications. Nucor is ranked #149 in the 2020 Fortune 500 largest public companies in America and employs approximately 28,000 teammates.
