Romney Briefed by Ambassador on Current Situation in Iraq

WASHINGTON—U.S. Senators Mitt Romney (R-UT) and Chris Murphy (D-CT), Chairman and Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Near East, South Asia, Central Asia, and Counterterrorism, today received a briefing from the United States Ambassador to Iraq, Matthew Tueller, regarding the current situation in Iraq. After the briefing, Senator Romney released the following statement:

“I appreciated receiving an update today from Ambassador Tueller regarding the ongoing security situation in Iraq, and I’m grateful for the dedicated work of diplomats of both countries during this extraordinarily challenging time. Preserving our partnership with the Iraqi government is critical to our goals of promoting an independent Iraq, countering Iranian influence in the region, preventing a resurgence of ISIS, and protecting America’s interests in the Middle East.”
