As the current political and civil unrest in Haiti continues to unfold with gangs crippling democratic order in the county, many civilians have fled the island. The dire situation has limited rescue operations and left the most vulnerable population in danger.
U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) sent a letter to U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken urging he prioritize cases of orphaned children that have been legally adopted by Americans.
The full text of the letter is below.
Dear Secretary Blinken:
I write with a profound sense of urgency and concern for the orphaned children of Haiti. This nation, home to many industrious families who have made Florida their home, is grappling with formidable challenges. In these trying times, many humanitarian groups, including Haitian diaspora organizations and religious ministries, have stood as inspirational examples and beacons of hope, kindness, and compassion. Despite working with constrained resources, they have assisted the most vulnerable inside Haiti, particularly orphaned children who bear the brunt of rejection, poverty, and instability. These groups play a vital role in providing the most basic and essential needs, emotional and educational support, and a loving environment. I humbly ask that throughout these difficult times, your department prioritize the welfare of Haiti’s orphaned children who have been adopted by Americans.
Recent news reports highlight the commendable efforts of these altruistic groups and individuals in Haiti. They have been making a positive impact in children’s lives, collaborating with local organizations, stakeholders, and government agencies. However, the deteriorating conditions on the ground have made it increasingly difficult for them to continue their work. Consequently, many of these children, who have been adopted by U.S. citizens, are now encountering significant obstacles in their journey to the United States.
My office has been in continuous communication with U.S. Department of State officials on various requests to assist American citizens to safely evacuate the country. I have also advocated for these humanitarian and religious groups operating inside Haiti who have shared their urgent plea for help in getting legally adopted orphaned children safely to the United States to live in peace with their new families. However, due to the precarious conditions on the ground, most of our Embassy personnel have departed Haiti, leaving these families struggling to find the necessary assistance required to finalize their travel arrangements.
As the situation in Haiti has reached a critical juncture, it is incumbent upon us to join forces and make a positive difference in the lives of Haiti’s orphaned children. I respectfully request the U.S. Department of State prioritize those children who have been adopted and require our immediate assistance.
