DORAL, FLA. (WSVN) - As South Florida residents and organizations worked to collect emergency supplies for the Bahamas in the wake of Hurricane Dorian, a warehouse in Doral where essentials are being brought received a visit from concerned government officials.
Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez joined U.S. Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., as they toured the Miami-Dade Emergency Warehouse along the 8000 block of Northwest 14th Street, Wednesday afternoon.
The officials looked at all the supplies that have been donated by private companies, local government entities and citizens. Donations are being kept at the facility before they are distributed.
Residents like Leslie Sinclair have been pulling into donation sites across South Florida throughout the day to donate items like canned goods, diapers and bottled water.
“There’s people that suffer from the damages that we were lucky to be spared of,” said Sinclair.
Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis was on hand to greet residents who came by City Hall with donated supplies, Wednesday afternoon.
The City of Miramar also created designated drop-off points.
“We were perhaps one high pressure or two away from that storm sitting right over the City of Miramar and other South Florida communities,” said Miramar Mayor Wayne Messam.
Broward County Schools went a step further. Officials welcomed families from the Bahamas into the school system.
“We will help you recover, which includes providing an opportunity for your children to make new friends and obtain a valued education in a supportive environment,” said Broward Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie during a news conference.
Back in Miami-Dade, the Caleb Center was another of several drop-off points taking in donations, as well as fire stations throughout the City of Miami.
Scott said he is overwhelmed by the response from Miami-Dade residents during the storm, and he is heartened by the outpouring of support for their island neighbor.
“All these supplies, all these things that the Bahamas are going to need, we’re blessed,” said Scott. “This is a beautiful county that cares about people, and this is a beautiful state where we care about people all around.”
Miami Mayor Francis Suarez said supplies are going to be put on cruise ships travelling to the Bahamas.
“It will be delivered by Norwegian Cruise Line tomorrow morning to Nassau,” he said.
