Florida Senator Rick Scott part of group introducing new ‘Read the Bill’ legislation

Florida Senator Rick Scott and four other GOP senators are introducing new legislation that would require lawmakers to read bills before voting on them.

In the new ‘Read the Bill’ legislation, members of Congress would have to certify that they have read every bill they cast a vote on and it would also require enough time for members of Congress to actually do that reading.

“Too often, lawmakers in Washington pass bills without having time to read them before they vote. These are new laws that impact American families and businesses and sometimes even authorize billions or trillions in tax dollar spending,” says Scott in a statement.

According to Scott, this new legislation would prohibit the Senate from considering a bill unless the text of the bill had been publicly available in an electronic forum for a mandatory minimum review period. Senators would then be required to self-certify that they read the measure.

Scott is joined by Senators Joni Ernst, Roger Marshall, Josh Hawley, and John Kennedy in introducing this bill.
