Rick Scott says Mayorkas ‘needs to be convicted’ over border crisis

.

Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) claimed he would like to see Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas “convicted” for lying about the state of the border.

Scott appeared on Fox Business’s Mornings with Maria Bartiromo Thursday after sending a letter to Vice President Kamala Harris asking her to preside over Mayorkas’s impeachment trial. The House has already voted to impeach the secretary, with a subsequent trial in the Democratic-controlled Senate on hold. According to Scott, “the Democrats do not want to have a trial.”

“So Harris is — should be — the presiding officer, that’s her job. She was — she’s the border czar, so she should be, gosh, an expert on this. So she should exactly know what Mayorkas has been doing or not doing. So we need to have a real trial,” Scott said. “He’s lied to us. He lied to me straight to my face. He said the border was secure; that’s a complete lie. He’s delusional. He has opened the border as a result of what Biden wanted done. He needs to be convicted.”

Harris has not responded to Scott’s letter.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) instead picked Senate President Pro Tempore Patty Murray (D-WA) to preside over the impeachment trial. The chamber will be back in session on Feb. 26. Two-thirds of the Senate would have to vote guilty on at least one of the two articles of impeachment in order to convict Mayorkas.

Schumer is expected to dismiss the trial of the first impeached Cabinet member in 150 years. However, dismissing an impeachment has never been done in U.S. history.
