SAVANNAH, GA. (WJCL) Savannah's largest employer is in the running for a major government contract.Gulfstream Aerospace is hoping to build the new Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System or JSTARS plane for the US Government.The proposed contract calls for 17 of the Gulfstream G550 aircraft to house the JSTARS which provide critical intelligence, surveillance and ground targeting for our military world wide.Wednesday, US Senator Johnny Isakson met with Gulfstream officials about the project."If we're going to continue to be the preeminent force to maintain peace and civility in the world," said Sen. Isakson. "You have to have the best intelligence in the world and the way to do that is to that intelligence on a jstar mission that's on the backbone provided by Gulfstream.""Hopefully it's a consideration that with the business jet platform like gulfstream we're going to demonstrate that we are offering a product that is higher in performance," said Leda Chong, Gulfstream Sr. VP, Government Sales.The first contract for the new aircraft is expected to be awarded late next year.
