Good
afternoon
-
Our
country’s
national
debt
is
about
to
hit
$20
trillion,
and every
Iowan is shouldering more
than $61,000
of
that
burden.
This
reckless
spending is simply
out-of-control,
which
is
why
I
am
committed
to
finding
ways
to
cut
the
pork
out
of
Washington's
budget.
Each
month,
I
give
out
the
Squeal
Award to
highlight
areas
of
federal
government
waste, fraud,
and
abuse that
must
be
cut.
Squeal
Award:
Bonuses
for
Cost-Cutters
Act
of
2017
With
so
many
federal
agencies, wasteful spending often flies
under
the
radar
and
goes
undetected. It
seems
as
though wasteful
spending
is almost encouraged with “use
it
or
lose
it”
policies
that
incentivize
agencies
to
spend
any
leftover
money
in
their
budgets
by
the
end
of
the
fiscal
year to
ensure
their
agency
doesn’t
see
a
decrease
in
the
money
allocated
to
them
by
Congress.
This
irresponsible way
of
thinking has
resulted
in end-of-the-year spending
that
is
almost
five
times
higher
than
the
rest
of
the
year's
weekly
average.
Egregiously,
one
study
finds
that
as
the
fiscal
year
comes
to
a
close,
the
federal
government
offices
in
the
Eastern
Time
Zone
shifts
its
unspent
funds
to
the
Pacific
Time
Zone
in
order
to
gain
three
extra
hours
of
last
minute
spending!
With
that
in
mind,
I
supported
the
bipartisan Bonuses
for
Cost-Cutters
Act
along
with
a
group
of
my colleagues
last
year. This
legislation incentivizes
federal
employees if
they
report
and
help identify
unneeded
or
surplus
funds
within
their
agency.
Once
reported, the
bill
ensures
that
90
percent
of
the
unused
funds
be
returned
to
the
Treasury
to
reduce
our
deficit
or
debt.
It
is
imperative
we
act
now
to
reduce
the costly burdens being
placed
on
all
Americans
and
future
generations.
With
that
in
mind, I
am
proud
to
present
the
Squeal
Award
to
the current
“use
it
or
lose
it”
spending
mentality
in
federal
agencies. And, I am
hopeful
that the new
administration
will
work
with
us
to
implement
these
cost-saving
procedures.
Do
you
have
an
example
of
government
waste
or
inefficiencies
that
I
should
take
a
look
at?
