Let’s Put Our Money Where The Science Is, Not on Squealy, Wasteful Projects.

How fast can a shrimp run on a treadmill? (66 feet per minute)

Where does it hurt the most to be stung by a bee? (in the nostril)

Which tastes better: water from a bottle or out of the toilet? (both scored about the same…insane, right?)

Does recycling make men seem less manly? (yes)

How long does it take for a panda to poop? (about 12 seconds)

These are some of the thought provoking questions that are being explored with the support of your hard earned tax dollars by the National Science Foundation (NSF).

The real question is “why?”

It’s an especially important question now as the U.S. Senate is debating a bill that would provide $84 billion more to the agency, which currently has an annual budget of $8.5 billion.

The intended purpose for the plus up is a good one: to advance America’s global leadership in science and technology, specifically to beat Communist China.

But folks, beating Red China requires more than just sending billions of dollars to an agency that has a long track record of wasting YOUR MONEY on silly, needless studies.

What we need to win is a clearly defined mission, with goals and—most importantly—leadership, along with the necessary financial support. Operation Warp Speed is a great example.  Washington set a clear mission and provided the resources to our expert scientists and dedicated medical professionals who then went to work and developed multiple safe and effective vaccines in record time.

This is the type of big thinking that is needed to keep America on the cutting edge of science and technology.

For squandering too many of your tax dollars on “shrimpy science”, I am awarding my May 2021 Squeal Award to NSF.

And to hold the agency accountable for its spending decisions, I am proposing that the Endless Frontier Act require every single project funded by the NSF include a price tag disclosing the cost to taxpayers.
