Hello everyone,
This morning we all woke up to learn that President Trump, the First Lady, and my colleague Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah) have tested positive for COVID-19. I wish them all a full and speedy recovery. The news further underscores the need for all of us to follow public health guidelines by wearing a mask, washing our hands, and practicing social distancing. As the virus continues to spread, we have to remain vigilant to limit further infections and protect our communities. If we do that, we can and will get through this.
I spent most of the week back in Washington, where I continued to push for a new relief package to help families, small businesses, and state and local governments struggling amidst the pandemic. I also continued to oppose efforts by Senate Republicans to ram through Judge Amy Coney Barrett’s nomination to the Supreme Court mere weeks before the election. At the same time, I’ve continued working for Colorado with new legislation, outreach, and support for critical projects in our state.
You can learn more about our efforts this week below, and as always, please be in touch with any questions or concerns.
Best,
Michael
FIGHTING FOR A NEW RELIEF BILL
If the Senate can find the time to ram through a Supreme Court nominee weeks before an election, surely it can find time to pass a new relief package for our families, small businesses, and state and local governments struggling in the pandemic. On Thursday, I went on MSNBC to speak with Stephanie Ruhle about the urgency of putting politics aside to pass a new relief package and fulfill our responsibility to the American people.
STRENGTHENING PUBLIC HEALTH
We are living through the worst pandemic in a century, and infectious disease experts are sounding the alarm that drug-resistant bacteria will lead to another public health crisis. On Wednesday, Senator Todd Young (R-Ind.) and I introduced the PASTEUR Act to better prepare for the threat of antibiotic-resistant infections. Our bipartisan legislation will better arm hospitals and providers in the fight against antimicrobial resistance by incenting development, targeting the most threatening infections, and encouraging the appropriate use of antibiotics.
GETTING OUT THE VOTE
Today I spoke with youth organizers from New Era Colorado who are working across our state to register young people to vote and engage in the political process. In our discussion, the organizers shared challenges to registering young people during the pandemic, the disappointment many young Coloradans feel with the dysfunction in Washington, and the priority issues they want to see at the top of the agenda -- from climate change to racial justice to college affordability.
MAKING PROGRESS ON THE ARKANSAS VALLEY CONDUIT
Tomorrow, I’m attending the groundbreaking for the Arkansas Valley Conduit, a critical infrastructure project dating back to 1962 that will provide clean drinking water for Coloradans in the Arkansas Valley. This breakthrough is a credit to the tireless advocacy of local leaders who missed no opportunity to come together and put aside politics to advocate for their community. Over the years, I’ve tried to carry their example to Washington. It’s why one of the first things I worked on after coming to the Senate was to help secure funding for the project, and I’ve worked in a bipartisan way ever since to make progress. Going forward, I’ll continue to push until the project is finished and everyone who needs clean drinking water in the Arkansas Valley has it.
