Hello everyone,
This week has been an exceptionally difficult time for our state. Like many of you, I’ve spent the days since the horrific mass shooting in Boulder grieving the loss of ten extraordinary Coloradans. I wanted America to know about the beautiful lives they lived, so I shared their stories on the Senate floor on Wednesday. They represent the best of Colorado.
We have endured too many tragedies as a state. The shooting at Columbine High School happened right before my oldest daughter, Caroline, was born. She is 21 years old, and her entire generation has grown up in the shadow of gun violence.
We can’t allow this to become normal -- not for her generation, or for future generations. And there is nobody else to act but the United States Senate. I’m not asking my colleagues to show the courage that Officer Talley showed -- but I am asking them to show an ounce of courage by doing whatever we can to keep weapons of war off our streets, pass universal background checks, limit the size of magazines, and address the mental health crisis facing this country.
You -- and people across this country -- have every right to expect us to finally do something about gun violence in America. It's the least we can do.
I hope you take some time to care for yourself and your communities this weekend. Support is available for those impacted directly, or indirectly -- you can call the Disaster Distress Helpline at 1-800-985-5990 or text TalkWithUs to 66746. Please feel free to contact my office at any time.
Take care,
Michael
