A message from Senator Michael Bennet

Hello everyone,

Great news ––  we just learned that the Colorado Outdoor Recreation and Economy Act –– the CORE Act –– will receive a hearing in the Senate on Wednesday, June 16 –– a significant step towards making the bill a law. The CORE Act, written by Coloradans, combines four different bills into a single proposal that would protect over 400,000 acres of public lands in Colorado. It’s the direct result of more than a decade of work from communities across our state.

The CORE Act has not made it to this point by chance. Rather, we are here because of the hard work of so many Coloradans, from county commissioners, outfitters, and ranchers, to hunters and anglers, and local businesses, who came together to hammer out compromises and find the best way forward. It’s critically important that we pass the CORE Act, both for the conservation values that it reflects and for Colorado’s economy.

Thanks to the leadership of my friend, Congressman Joe Neguse, the CORE Act passed the House earlier this Congress. On Wednesday, the CORE Act will take a tremendous step forward with a hearing in the Senate.

Coloradans have waited too long for these proposals to become a reality. It is our time to act in the Senate.

Below are some other highlights from the week if you’d like to learn more. I hope you’ll take a moment this weekend to enjoy our beautiful public lands, and as always, don’t hesitate to contact my office.

Sincerely,

CLAIMING YOUR IMPROVED CHILD TAX CREDIT

Mark your calendars –– Vice President Kamala Harris just announced that June 21 will be “Child Tax Credit Day!” Families will start to receive their advance monthly Child Tax Credit payments on July 15. This week, the IRS announced it has started to reach out to families who are eligible for these payments.

Be sure to consistently check the IRS website to find up-to-date information on the advance Child Tax Credit payments. Beginning July 15 Coloradans will begin to benefit from something that we've accomplished in Washington D.C. It's going to make a huge difference to people, and that’s why I will continue fighting to make the improved Child Tax Credit permanent.

KEEPING SKI FEES LOCAL

Skiing is a vital component of Colorado’s outdoor recreation industry, creating jobs and boosting local economies. The partnership between ski areas, the Forest Service, and mountain communities is critical –– especially in areas like the White River National Forest.

That’s why U.S. Senator John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) and I introduced the Ski Hill Resources for Economic Development (SHRED) Act to invest in outdoor recreation in mountain communities. This bill will rightfully keep ski funds in the National Forests where they are generated to help local communities tackle their own priorities, like making trailhead improvements or increasing staffing. I look forward to working with my colleagues to get this done for mountain communities in Colorado and across the country.

INVITING THE VICE PRESIDENT TO COLORADO

This week, a bipartisan group of my colleagues and I invited Vice President Kamala Harris ––  the newly appointed Chair of the National Space Council ––  to visit Colorado and tour our dynamic space industry. Colorado is the largest space economy per capita in the country, home to over 500 space-related companies and suppliers, including nine of the nation’s largest aerospace contractors. This concentration of technical expertise from the Eastern Plains to the Western Slope drives cutting-edge innovation that benefits our entire country.

Because of our robust space industry, Colorado should be the permanent home for the U.S. Space Command. I’ll continue working with my colleagues to urge the Biden Administration to investigate former President Donald Trump’s decision to move Space Command from Colorado to Alabama.

REGINA RODRIGUEZ MAKES HISTORY AS DISTRICT COURT JUDGE

I was thrilled this week when the Senate voted to confirm Regina Rodriguez to serve on the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado. Throughout her distinguished career, Regina has demonstrated a deep commitment to service, justice, and the rule of law. Her overwhelmingly bipartisan confirmation signifies that she will make an exceptional judge –– something U.S. Senator John Hickenlooper (D-Colo.) and I already knew when we recommended her for the position back in February. Regina made history as the first Asian-American to serve on the U.S. District Court in Colorado. Her seat on the court will make it more reflective of and responsive to the people it serves, and I have no doubt that Regina will serve the people of Colorado with integrity. Watch my floor speech in support of her nomination here

INVESTING IN EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES

For too long, Washington has been asleep at the switch while Beijing has pursued a “China First” policy to write the global rules of the road from technology to trade. This week, I’m happy to report that the Senate passed the bipartisan U.S. Innovation and Competition (USICA) Act to provide a comprehensive response to China, invest in technologies vital to our competitiveness and security, and bolster America’s global leadership. And by including $1.5 billion to unlock the benefits of 5G in line with legislation I introduced last year, the bill underscores America’s commitment to develop secure technologies that will underpin economic growth. I’m glad we were able to pass this major legislation with bipartisan support.
