A message from Senator Michael Bennet

Hello everyone,

This weekend, we’ll gather with friends and family to celebrate the 246th anniversary of American independence. Two-and-a-half centuries may seem like a long time, but if you look at the history of humankind, it’s the blink of an eye. And it’s a reminder that, out of all the people who’ve ever walked this earth, only the smallest fraction has ever lived in a democracy. So this Fourth of July, let’s remember what a privilege it is for us to be a part of this great experiment in self-government, and to have the opportunity to make it better. Let’s also take a moment to thank the men and women in uniform who put their lives on the line every day to protect our democracy and the freedoms we enjoy.

I know many of you feel discouraged about the direction our country is headed. I too am deeply worried. But that isn’t a reason to give up. It’s a reason to roll up our sleeves and do what generations before us have: insist on progress and continue the hard work of making our country more democratic, more fair, and more free.

E Pluribus Unum. Out of many, one.

That’s what our nation is about. It’s about people from many countries, languages, races, and religions coming together with a shared belief in the strength of our democracy.

This weekend, I hope you’ll take a moment to celebrate the Fourth of July with friends and family. As always, please feel free to contact my office at any time.

Sincerely,

CALLING ON PRESIDENT BIDEN TO PROTECT THE RIGHT TO CHOOSE

In the aftermath of last week’s Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, I joined over 30 of my Democratic colleagues to call on President Joe Biden to protect the right to choose.

This activist ruling stripped women of their individual liberty to make intensely personal decisions about their bodies and futures. It sends us back to a time when women faced horrific risks to their lives because they didn’t have the option to make their own health care choices. This is an emergency. President Biden must take immediate action to protect abortion access across the country.

PROTECTING VETERANS, MILITARY SERVICEMEMBERS, & LOW-INCOME FAMILIES FROM HOUSING DISCRIMINATION

With Coloradans in the middle of a housing crisis, no family should face additional hurdles while searching for a home. But right now, military servicemembers, veterans, and low-income families can be denied housing based on how they pay their rent. I introduced legislation that would expand protections under the Fair Housing Act of 1968 to ban discrimination based on source of income, military status, or veteran status, giving more families access to affordable housing and a shot at economic mobility. It’s past time that we end this harmful discrimination and protect families looking for a place to live.

INVESTING IN COLORADO COMMUNITIES

I was delighted to welcome Mayor Mitch Landrieu to Colorado this week. I'm deeply grateful for his tireless work with the Biden Administration to make sure Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funds are reaching our communities. On Wednesday, we toured the Central I-70 project — a perfect example of how we can use this federal funding to invest in our roads and neighborhoods.

I-70 is a critical transportation corridor in Colorado, connecting Denver to the Western Slope. It’s vital for families and businesses across our state, but it is long overdue for investment. Decades ago, this stretch of the highway was built down the middle of the predominantly Black and low-income Elyria-Swansea neighborhoods, and this project will help us reconnect those communities and take steps to repair the harm done.

With projects like this, I can’t think of a state that is better prepared to use Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funding than Colorado.
