A message from Senator Michael Bennet

Hello everyone,

Last year, Congress passed a Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to rebuild and reconnect America. It’s the biggest investment in our infrastructure since we built the interstate highway under President Eisenhower – and it will invest over $5 billion in Colorado to help us compete in the 21st century.

We’ve already started to see the benefits here in our state. The Colorado Department of Transportation has started to use the funds to repair I-70 — a critical gateway to our mountain communities and the American West.

And this week, we announced funding for upgrades at Denver International Airport and Durango-La Plata County airport to provide additional capacity, replace aging infrastructure, and improve energy efficiency. This will help DIA and DRO continue to effectively serve Colorado’s growing communities and bolster our state’s economy.

We also welcomed the news that five Coloradans have been named to the Wildland Fire Mitigation and Management Commission, created by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Congratulations to Dan Gibbs, Jim Hubbard, Madelene McDonald, Scott Miller, and Mike Morgan for their nomination to the Commission, which will play a key role in recommending how federal agencies can better prevent, mitigate, suppress and manage wildland fires, as well as policies and strategies to restore the lands affected by wildfire.

This Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is a major step toward building an economy that when it grows, it grows, for everyone – not just those at the very top.  Out of all 50 states, there is no state better prepared to participate in this investment – and to lead the country – than Colorado.

Sincerely,

Michael

CALLING ON PRESIDENT BIDEN TO PROTECT PRIVATE MEDICAL INFORMATION

Last week, Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) and I called on the Biden Administration to take further action to protect the privacy of Americans and their medical information. Specifically, we urged them to update the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) to protect the privacy of patients who receive abortions and other reproductive health care services from law enforcement agencies.

On Friday, President Biden issued an Executive Order which directed HHS to identify ways to better protect sensitive information related to reproductive health care. Our push to update HIPAA should be at the top of their list.

The decision to start or expand a family is intensely personal and private. When patients speak with their providers about options for contraceptives, the progression of their pregnancy, or their choices to terminate a pregnancy, they expect those conversations to remain confidential.

Following the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs, millions of Americans have lost a fundamental constitutional right to make their own health and reproductive decisions. We must do all that we can to protect their fundamental right to privacy.

ENSURING ACCESS TO HIGH-QUALITY EDUCATION FOR COLORADO KIDS

Every student deserves access to high-quality education that prepares them for success. In May, I joined my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to express concerns about a proposed rule from the Department of Education that would jeopardize Colorado’s charter schools and limit families’ education options.

I was pleased to hear last week that the Department of Education took our concerns seriously and eased their proposed regulations. This will ensure high-quality charter schools can continue to access funds, operate without additional, unnecessary barriers and bureaucracy, and reach more families in underserved communities. Read the U.S. Department of Education’s new rules on the Charter School Program here.

CELEBRATING NATIONAL PARKS AND RECREATION MONTH
