A message from Senator Michael Bennet

Hello everyone,

This week, it was my honor to begin my third term representing the great state of Colorado in the United States Senate. As we begin the new Congress, I’m optimistic that we can build on our historic progress over the last two years and address the headwinds facing our country.

Congress needs to get to work to create an economy that works for everyone, to bring down costs for Coloradan families, and to address a changing climate that threatens our Western economy and way of life. These are not just my priorities, but the issues I hear about from Coloradans across the state. As always, I will continue to carry Colorado voices to Washington to meet these urgent challenges. We have a duty to turn over a stronger economy and democracy for the next generation.

Sincerely,

MARKING A SOLEMN ANNIVERSARY FOR OUR DEMOCRACY

Two years ago, the world witnessed a violent insurrection and an attack on the seat of American democracy when rioters stormed the Capitol to stop the peaceful transfer of power. If not for the incredible bravery of the Capitol Police and the other law enforcement officers, that day could have very easily upended our democratic process.

Last year, I spoke on the floor of the Senate to recognize this solemn anniversary and share our work ahead to secure American democracy for the next generation. I’m glad to say that in the time since, Congress has passed the Electoral Count Reform Act to ensure an orderly and peaceful transfer of power after a presidential election.

Most democracies that endure an event like January 6th don’t end up with a peaceful transfer of power. America did — thanks to the Capitol Police, state judges, and local election officials who stood for the Constitution and against the Big Lie. Let's honor their example by defending our democracy.

LOOKING BACK ON WHAT WE ACCOMPLISHED IN 2022

The last year gave us much to celebrate, including how Congress came together  to pass several significant pieces of legislation. Here are just a few of my highlights from 2022:

We delivered $4 billion in the Inflation Reduction Act to confront the water crisis in the Colorado River. This funding is a great start for the work we need to do to protect the American West and address the mega-drought that threatens Colorado’s way of life.

The Inflation Reduction Act was also a huge win for the American people over Big Pharma. As of January 1st, seniors no longer have to pay more than $35/month for their insulin, and thousands of Coloradans have access to more affordable health care.

We also made the largest investment in our nation’s physical infrastructure since President Eisenhower was in office. Thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, Colorado has received $100 million to improve Floyd Hill – a huge pain point for travelers along I-70, as well as $350 million for the South Platte River Project to protect communities, support recreation, and improve water quality in Denver.

We preserved both painful and inspiring parts of Colorado’s history by protecting Camp Amache and Camp Hale, ensuring that future generations will be able to learn our state’s history and grow from our past.

We also made important progress on a range of issues facing Coloradans from passing the Postal Service Reform Act which will improve the U.S. Postal Service’s financial stability and service for all Coloradans to investing in American manufacturing jobs with the CHIPS and Science Act. And we took historic steps to protect Americans by passing the first federal gun safety bill in decades and the Respect for Marriage Act, a historic step toward equality.

The best part of my job is traveling around the state and hearing directly from Coloradans about your lives, families, and communities. As we start the new year, I can’t wait to get on the road again and see you soon.

Happy New Year!
