Hello everyone,
This week, I spoke on the Senate floor to remind President Biden and my Senate colleagues of the urgency of the Space Command basing decision – not just for Colorado, but for our national security.
When President Trump made the abrupt decision to move U.S. Space Command from Colorado to Alabama, he put politics first. Now after two years of investigations that showed Trump’s decision was flawed, the Biden Administration may be close to affirming it. That is unacceptable.
Watch my speech on the Senate floor HERE.
Especially in the face of Putin’s invasion of Ukraine and China’s saber-rattling around the world, decisions of this importance should be made in the interest of our national security, not politics. The Biden Administration has the opportunity to restore the integrity of the Space Command basing process, and if they do, they will find that Space Command belongs in Colorado and shouldn't be moved anywhere else.
Sincerely,
Michael
HOLDING THE IRS ACCOUNTABLE
At a time when working families face rising prices at the grocery store, the gas pump, and on their heating bill, the last thing they need is to pay more in taxes. That’s why when I heard that the IRS was considering taxing TABOR payments for the first time in 30 years, I was outraged.
I immediately called the Treasury Department and the IRS and demanded that they fix this. On Friday, the IRS clarified that it won’t tax last year’s TABOR refunds. But as a member of the Senate Finance Committee, my work holding the IRS accountable and helping Coloradans keep their hard-earned money is not done.
That’s why this week, when I had the opportunity to question President Biden’s nominee to lead the IRS, I asked him about this issue, and he committed to working with Colorado on it. The confusion the IRS caused should never have happened, and I’ll keep fighting to keep TABOR tax-free.

INCREASING ACCESS TO CLEAN WATER FOR ALL
For years, I’ve sounded the alarm on forever chemicals – otherwise known as PFAS – in our water supply and the urgent need to protect our communities from this contamination.
This week, we welcomed nearly $86 million from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to help small and historically underserved communities across Colorado increase their access to safe and clean water by investing in water treatment infrastructure. Everyone deserves access to clean air and water, and this is a strong first step to making that promise a reality.

DELIVERING NEARLY $1 BILLION FOR THE WESTERN WATER CRISIS
Colorado got more good news from Washington this week. The U.S. Departments of Agriculture and Interior just announced that they are making nearly $1 billion available from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act to address the Western water crisis and to invest in environmentally-friendly farming practices. This funding will help communities, water users, and family farmers and ranchers mitigate the effects of the 1,200 year megadrought we face in the West. I’ll fight for Colorado to get its fair share of this funding.
HONORING COLORADANS WHO VOLUNTEERED AT NORTH PLATTE CANTEEN
During World War II, thousands of Coloradans contributed food, money, and time to serve the North Platte Canteen, which provided hospitality to soldiers traveling through the area. The North Platte Canteen in Nebraska was one of the largest volunteer efforts during the war, and Coloradans from Julesburg, Ovid, Sedgwick, Amherst, Holyoke, and Haxtun traveled hundreds of miles to volunteer their time, money, and resources.
This week, I introduced a bill to award the Congressional Gold Medal to the individuals and communities who volunteered at North Platte Canteen. I am grateful for their patriotism, service, and the example they set for all of us.
