A message from Senator Michael Bennet

Hello everyone,

Every parent I talk to across Colorado tells me they're worried about how social media’s algorithms are addicting their kids and affecting their mental health. Moms wait outside of my town halls to tell me things like, “My daughter is 5 '10 and weighs 105 pounds and because of what she's seen on social media feels like she's got the worst body of anybody in her class.” Parents are saying their kids don’t read anymore because no book can compete with what’s on their phones. And now, the use of artificial intelligence is growing--without any required safeguards to protect our kids, prevent false information, or preserve privacy.

As technology moves quicker than Congress could ever hope to keep up with, we need an expert federal agency that can stand up for the American people and ensure AI tools, social media, and digital platforms operate in the public interest.

That's why I introduced the Digital Platforms Commission Act (DPCA) this week. The DPCA would create an expert body, like the Food and Drug Administration or the Federal Communications Commission, to stand up for the American people.

There’s no reason that the biggest tech companies on Earth should face less regulation than Colorado’s small businesses – especially as we see technology corrode our democracy and harm our kids' mental health with virtually no oversight. I'm working to change that.

PROTECTING COLORADO PUBLIC LANDS

What’s happening: Last year, we achieved a major victory for Colorado’s public lands when we established the Camp Hale-Continental Divide National Monument and secured a proposed administrative mineral withdrawal for the Thompson Divide. But our work isn't done.

What I’m doing: This week, I reintroduced the CORE Act to protect an additional 420,000 acres of public land in Colorado, establish new wilderness areas, and safeguard existing outdoor recreation opportunities to boost the economy.

Why this matters: Colorado’s public lands fuel more than our economy – they are a cornerstone of our way of life. This critical legislation will build on our previous work and protect our public lands for future generations.

ADVANCING CLEAN ENERGY ACROSS RURAL AMERICA

What’s happening: As Colorado faces high energy costs and the effects of climate-fueled disasters, like wildfire and unprecedented water shortages for our farmers and ranchers, the need to invest in clean energy has never been more urgent.

What I’m doing:championed nearly $14 billion in the Inflation Reduction Act to accelerate clean energy deployment, create local economic opportunities, and lower costs for families in rural communities. This week, we welcomed nearly $11 billion of that funding to support our country’s rural electric coops as they make the transition to clean energy. This funding will not only accelerate the deployment of clean energy in Colorado’s rural communities, but lower energy costs, create local jobs, and cut greenhouse gas emissions.

CALLING FOR MORE JUDGES FOR THE DISTRICT COURT OF COLORADO

What's happening: As Colorado's population grows, the District Court of Colorado’s caseload has reached the highest level since the Court started tracking this data.

What I’m doing: This week, I, alongside Senator Hickenlooper and Representative Neguse, introduced the Colorado Judgeship Act to add three district judges to the District Court of Colorado. This legislation will help our courts administer a fair and efficient justice system and provide much-needed support to the District Court of Colorado.
