1 BIG THING: PROTECTING MIGRANT CHILDREN
What’s happening: The U.S. immigration system is broken and those that suffer most from its dysfunction are migrant children. Many of them show up to immigration court proceedings alone, afraid, and with no idea about what to expect.
What I believe: Since joining the Senate, I’ve fought to reform our immigration system and protect innocent children who cross the border seeking asylum. It makes no sense to me that their cases should be handled in the same manner as adult cases and in courts that are designed for adults.
What I’m doing: That’s why I brought together bipartisan colleagues from both the House and Senate to introduce a pragmatic solution to ensure kids fleeing violence and persecution are treated with the dignity and care they deserve. Our bill establishes a new children’s immigration court to ensure unaccompanied children understand their court proceedings, reduce the immigration court backlog, and speed up processing time for both children and adults.
2. PREVENTING ANTISEMITISM
What’s happening: Following Hamas’ recent terrorist attacks in Israel and amid the ongoing war, antisemitism is on full display in cities around the country. According to the Anti-Defamation League, antisemitic incidents are up 388% since those attacks.
What I believe: Speech inciting violence, threats, and acts of terrorism must be taken seriously, and we must always stand firm against antisemitism and hate in all forms.
What I’m doing: This week, I joined bipartisan colleagues to urge the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Federal Bureau of Investigation to work with community leaders and state and local law enforcement to prevent these incidents and protect Jewish Americans.
3. IMPROVING MENTAL HEALTH CARE ACCESS FOR RURAL COMMUNITIES
What’s happening: Colorado’s family farmers and ranchers face uncertainty from forces beyond their control – including volatile commodity prices, increased input costs, more frequent wildfires, severe drought, and other extreme weather events. These challenges significantly affect farmers’ and ranchers’ wellbeing, yet many rural communities lack access to mental and behavioral health care.
What I believe: Congress needs to do more to improve access to essential health care for every American, especially amid a national mental health crisis.
What I’m doing: This week, I introduced a bill that would help us better understand the barriers that producers face to access care – an important step to expand access to mental health care for Americans in rural communities across the country.
