Opposing President Trump’s Most Dangerous Cabinet Nominees

In case you missed it: Last month, in confirmation hearings for Tulsi Gabbard, President Trump’s pick for Director of National Intelligence, and Robert F. Kennedy Jr., nominee for Health and Human Services secretary, I asked the nominees to answer simple questions about their past statements. This includes dangerous conspiracy theories and half-truths that they have repeatedly peddled and profited off of.

This week: Ahead of their Senate confirmation votes, I went to the floor to speak in opposition to both Gabbard and Kennedy. I urged my colleagues from both sides of the aisle to join me in voting against these dangerous and unqualified nominees.

What’s next: While I’m disappointed that both Gabbard and Kennedy were confirmed by the Senate, I won’t stop demanding answers and accountability from our country’s highest leaders.

2. Helping Coloradans Recover from the Gold King Mine Spill

What happened: In 2015, the Gold King Mine spill released 3 million gallons of polluted mining wastewater into the Animas and San Juan rivers, affecting waterways and communities in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, the Southern Ute reservation, and the Navajo Nation.

What I’m doing: A decade later, I’m continuing to work to ensure those affected receive the compensation they were promised. This week I reintroduced legislation to help families, farmers, and outdoor recreation companies in Southwest Colorado recover certain remaining costs and damages incurred from the spill and help make these communities whole again.

3. Demanding Answers From The Trump Administration

What’s happening: From protecting federal wildland firefighters to sounding the alarm on the effects of the federal funding freeze on Colorado, I joined my Senate colleagues this week to push against the Trump Administration’s dangerous efforts:

  • I joined Senator Hickenlooper and Governor Polis to demand that the Trump Administration comply with federal court orders and unfreeze millions in federal funding for Colorado grantees.
  • I introduced legislation to reinstate long-standing Department of Homeland Security policies to prevent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) from making arrests at sensitive locations like schools, hospitals, and churches.
  • I urged the Trump Administration to exempt seasonal firefighters from the federal hiring freeze and sounded the alarm on the harmful effects of President Trump’s federal funding freeze on wildfire mitigation efforts.

What’s next: As President Trump and his cabinet continue taking unprecedented actions that threaten our national security, breach Americans’ privacy, and undermine the U.S. on the global stage, I’ll continue doing everything I can to fight back.

4. IN THE NEWS THIS WEEK

  • I met with the Colorado Rural Health Center and rural health providers from across our state to discuss the importance of protecting Medicaid for the millions of Coloradans who rely on it. As our rural health providers face numerous challenges, I'll continue doing everything I can to support them.
  • This week, we recognized Frederick Douglass, whose work as an abolitionist, civil rights activist, and more made our country more equal and more just. During Black History Month and always, let’s honor his historic work.
  • Friday marked seven years since a gunman took the lives of 17 students and staff at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. On this solemn anniversary, I’m thinking of the victims of this unimaginable tragedy, their families, and the entire Parkland community
