Fighting for America’s Dedicated Public Servants

What’s happening: Since entering office a month ago, President Trump has already taken a series of unprecedented actions to eviscerate the federal workforce. The Administration’s recent firing of 3,400 U.S. Forest Service employees – including many who call Colorado home – is just the latest in these deeply concerning efforts. It’s an insult to Colorado and all Americans.

What I believe: America’s public lands are under increased pressure due to record visitation and increased drought and wildfire risk. We need these dedicated public servants now more than ever.

What I did: I’m continuing to do everything I can to push back on the Trump Administration’s harmful actions. This week, I introduced an amendment to the Senate budget resolution that would reinstate 5,500 recently terminated public land management agency staff, including thousands of Forest Service employees. I also:

  • Spoke on the Senate floor to sound the alarm on these incredibly shortsighted mass terminations and urge President Trump to reverse course immediately; and
  • Joined Senator Hickenlooper and my colleagues to call on the Trump Administration to address the harmful effects of blanket resignation offers to federal employees.

2. Supporting the Ukrainian People’s Fight for Democracy

What’s happening: Last week, I joined a bipartisan group of senators on a delegation to Kyiv, Ukraine. During my visit, I saw first-hand how the Ukrainian people continue to fight bravely against Russian President Vladimir Putin’s unprovoked aggression. Yet the Trump Administration continues to embolden Putin and undermine Ukrainian President Zelensky, including by falsely claiming that Ukraine is responsible for the war and holding Ukraine-focused peace talks with Russia without Ukraine.

What I believe: For nearly three years to the day, the Ukrainian people have fought bravely against Putin’s unjustified aggression and shown us what it looks like to fight and die for democracy. We must remain steadfast in our support for them and ensure they have a place at the negotiating table. The last thing we should do is weaken their negotiating position – and ours – when there is so much at stake for Ukraine, the United States, and our allies.

What I did: This week, I went to the Senate floor to sound the alarm on President Trump’s dangerous actions and remind my colleagues of the stakes of this war. For the sake of the Ukrainian people, U.S. national security, and democracy around the world, we must continue supporting Ukraine’s fight.

3. Investing in Watersheds Across the West

What’s happening: In the West, our forests, grasslands, and watersheds are essential to our economy and way of life. But as they face increasingly severe threats – from the worsening effects of climate change to consistent underinvestment from the federal government – we must meet these challenges head-on.

What I did: This week, I reintroduced my bicameral Protect the West Act to make a $60 billion investment in forests across the West. This investment will support wildfire mitigation efforts, restore watersheds, and protect communities.

What I believe: As we face a 1,200-year megadrought and wildfire season that never seems to end, we need to break from the status quo to protect our natural resources and precious public lands for future generations. We have no time to waste.
