A message from Senator Michael Bennet

Dear neighbor,

Today, my thoughts are with the city of Boulder and the entire Colorado Jewish community as we grapple with yesterday’s heinous terror attack – on the eve of the Jewish holiday of Shavuot.

A lone attacker committed unspeakable violence against Jewish Coloradans, marching peacefully as they do every week, to raise awareness about the hostages held by Hamas for over 600 days. It is particularly upsetting – and unfathomable – to learn that one of the victims is a Holocaust survivor. Susan and I are praying for her and the swift recovery of all eight of the innocent victims and their families.

I am grateful for local and federal law enforcement, who were immediately on the scene and are conducting a thorough investigation. I stand ready to assist in whatever ways they need as the situation develops.

Our founders built America on the tenets of religious freedom and tolerance. But, in recent years, antisemitism has been on the rise – reaching unprecedented levels here in the United States, with deadly consequences.

Just two weeks ago, a terrorist brutally murdered an innocent young couple, in the shadow of the U.S. Capitol as they left an American Jewish Committee event about Middle East peacebuilding at the Capital Jewish Museum. Targeting of Jews is a direct result of antisemitic rhetoric left unchecked.

Yesterday’s attack reminds us that we must stand united against the scourge of antisemitism. Hate has no home in Colorado.

Thank you,
