Fighting to Protect Our Public Lands

What’s happening: Last week, Senate Republicans added language to their budget bill that would put up to 3 million acres of public lands up for sale to pay for tax cuts for billionaires. This radical Republican proposal would require the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Forest Service to sell treasured public lands in eleven Western states – including Colorado. Notably, Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee Chair Mike Lee exempted Montana in a bid to secure the support of Senators Daines and Sheehy.
What I believe: Colorado’s public lands are the foundation of our economy and represent treasured parts of our culture, our geography, and our history. Democrats and Republicans across Colorado have come together to say our public lands are not for sale.
What I’m doing: I held a virtual press conference with Colorado U.S. Representatives Joe Neguse, Brittany Pettersen, and Jason Crow, Colorado State Senator Dylan Roberts, and Colorado advocates for outdoor recreation, hunting, and angling to speak out against the sale of public lands. I also released a statement with Representative Neguse reaffirming our commitment to fighting any provisions in the Republican Budget Bill that put a price tag on our public lands.
2. Ensuring Safety for Jewish Communities

What’s happening: In the wake of October 7, antisemitic attacks have been on the rise. While antisemitism is not a new problem, recent attacks have emphasized the need for more security and protections for Jewish communities in Colorado and across the United States.
What I believe: We must stand united against hate in all its forms. Antisemitism has no place in Colorado.
What I’m doing: This week, I sent a letter with Colorado U.S. Senator John Hickenlooper to Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, Majority Leader John Thune, Senate Appropriations Chair Susan Collins, and Senate Appropriations Vice Chair Patty Murray on the need to increase Nonprofit Security Grant Program funding. I’ve heard from Jewish leaders across Colorado on the necessity of hiring more security personnel – these funds will make that possible.

4. IN THE NEWS THIS WEEK
- After years of work to help Crested Butte keep its Post Office, I was glad to hear that it will remain open until 2031. This is an important step to maintaining timely and consistent mail delivery for the northern Gunnison Valley.
- This week, we celebrate Juneteenth – the anniversary of the end of slavery in the United States. Juneteenth is an opportunity to celebrate African Americans’ fight for freedom, and an important reminder of the work we have left to do to dismantle racism.
