Colorado Capital Conference

What happened: This week, we hosted the annual Colorado Capital Conference in collaboration with Colorado Mesa University and the University of Colorado. Each year, this conference provides Coloradans with a unique opportunity to engage with our nation's leaders and share ideas to strengthen our state. It was great to answer attendees' questions and see them learn about everything from reporting news in today's political climate to governing in a polarized America.

What I believe: The best part of my job is hearing from Coloradans about the issues that matter most to them. I am grateful to everyone from across our state who traveled to Washington this week. Thank you to Senator Hickenlooper, Representatives Jeff Hurd and Joe Neguse, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and all those who helped make this conference a success.

2. Big Beautiful Betrayal

What’s happening: Republicans' disastrous budget bill guts health care programs, raises energy costs, and threatens food security.

What I believe:
This bill is a direct attack on the American West and on the American people. The cuts to Medicaid and SNAP will be lethal. This isn’t fiscal responsibility — it’s cruelty.

What I’m doing:
Republicans have made it clear that we are not leaving D.C. until this legislation passes. As long as Republicans continue to try to harm Americans with dangerous policies, my colleagues and I will fight to stop them. I will be voting no.

3. Protecting a Woman's Right to Choose

What I know:
When the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, it was the first time in U.S. history that the American people were stripped of a fundamental right. Maternal mortality rates have risen consistently in states where access to abortion is restricted or banned. I will always fight to protect a woman’s right to reproductive freedom.

What I’m doing:
On the third anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, I joined the Senate Democratic caucus to introduce the Women’s Health Protection Act of 2025.

What this means:
The Women’s Health Protection Act would guarantee access to abortion nationwide, saving lives and ensuring that all women in America can make decisions about their bodies and their futures.

4. IN THE NEWS THIS WEEK

  • Students and recent grads: my Colorado and D.C. offices are now accepting applications for our Fall Internship Program. Applications are open until July 3. More information on how to apply can be found here.
  • While the first radical proposal to sell up to 3.3 million acres of public land was removed from the budget bill, Senate Republicans' revised plan would still sell off up to 1.2 million acres of public land to pay for tax cuts for billionaires. We may have won the first battle, but the fight isn't over. I will oppose this legislation every step of the way.
  • The Trump Administration is terminating the 988 suicide prevention crisis line for LGBTQ+ youth as of July 17. Colorado knows how dangerous ending this service will be and is working to ensure the LGBTQ+ community is protected, not abandoned.
