Ensuring Children's Access to Health Care

What’s happening: The Republican “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” will cut $1 trillion from Medicaid and CHIP. This includes an estimated $14 billion in federal funding for Medicaid in Colorado, with rural communities estimated to lose $1.9 billion. This legislation puts millions of children at risk of losing their health care, including nearly half a million children in Colorado.
What I did: I introduced the Keep Kids Covered Act to provide continuous health care coverage for kids on Medicaid and CHIP until the age of 6. This legislation will guarantee no child loses access to health care during a crucial time in their development.
What I believe: It is critical that children eligible for Medicaid and CHIP keep their coverage as Republicans’ cruel cuts to these vital programs go into effect. I will keep fighting to ensure no child loses access to health care when they need it most.
2. Sign Up for my Town Hall in Durango
What’s happening: Join me for a town hall in Durango on Tuesday, August 5th at 3:00 pm MT.
How to sign up: Please register here to attend the town hall. On the day before the event, you will receive a confirmation email with details about the event location and entry. In case you can’t join us in person, you can watch a livestream on my Facebook page.
What I believe: The best part of my job is getting to come home and speak with Coloradans about the issues that matter most to them. I look forward to hearing from constituents next week in Durango.
3. Colorado Leads the Way on Protecting Wildlife

Visiting the Greenland Wildlife Overpass project with the Colorado Department of Transportation
What’s happening: Colorado is building the Greenland Wildlife Overpass on Interstate 25 between Denver and Colorado Springs – a groundbreaking structure that will become the largest wildlife overpass crossing in the world.
What I did: In September 2023, I sent a letter with Senator John Hickenlooper to the U.S. Department of Transportation to help the Greenland Wildlife Overpass project secure funding through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. In December 2023, I welcomed $22 million in funding for the project. This week, I visited the Greenland Wildlife Overpass with the Colorado Department of Transportation.
Why this matters: Colorado continues to set the standard for essential infrastructure investments in the Western United States. This record-breaking wildlife overpass is expected to reduce vehicle-animal collisions by 90% on one of Colorado’s busiest stretches of highway, protecting wildlife and keeping Colorado drivers safe.
4. IN THE NEWS THIS WEEK
- Happy 149th birthday, Colorado! I hope everyone gets the chance to celebrate Colorado Day and enjoy our state’s beautiful outdoor spaces with free admission to Colorado state parks on August 4th.
- I reintroduced the Protecting Air Ambulance Services for Americans Act. In Colorado and across the country, air ambulance bases have been forced to close due to rising costs, removing access to lifesaving care for rural communities. This bill will bring transparency to our health care system and preserve critical access to air ambulance services.
- I spoke with Dr. Chato Hazelbaker, President of Pueblo Community College, about how we can support students from all backgrounds in Colorado. We must work together to give students the resources they need to build successful careers in the 21st-century economy.
