Fighting to Keep Space Command HQ in Colorado

What’s happening: This week, President Donald Trump announced his decision to move Space Command headquarters from Colorado Springs, Colorado to Huntsville, Alabama.

What I believe: This decision out of the Oval Office is blatantly political and an abuse of power. President Trump was clear that he is rewarding his political friends and allies. He explained his reasoning by talking about how “corrupt” Colorado’s mail-in-ballot system is. Let’s be clear: our voting system in Colorado is fraud free and the gold standard for the United States of America. This was a nakedly political move and we cannot stand for it. Colorado Springs is the appropriate home for U.S. Space Command Headquarters to ensure America’s national security.

What I’m doing: I joined the Colorado Congressional delegation to issue a bipartisan statement opposing President Trump’s decision to move Space Command Headquarters. I am looking into every option to keep Space Command in Colorado Springs and stand united with the entire delegation in this fight.

2. Demanding Answers from RFK Jr.

What’s happening:
In addition to presiding over the largest cuts to American health care in history, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has continued to push his dangerous anti-health and anti-science agenda, lie to Congress, and spread disinformation. His incompetence and ideology puts the lives of all Coloradans at risk.

What I’m doing: In the Senate Finance Committee hearing this week, I questioned Secretary Kennedy on his handpicked panel’s upcoming vaccine recommendations for children. Making vaccines more expensive and harder to get is the last thing Coloradans need. I also joined the Senate Finance Committee Democrats to issue a statement calling on Secretary Kennedy to resign.

3. Investing in Colorado’s Forests and Watersheds

What I did:
I introduced the bipartisan Headwaters Protection Act with my colleagues, U.S. Senators John Hickenlooper (D-Colo.), Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.), and James Risch (R-Idaho). Our bill will protect critical water resources and forests in the West by expanding two U.S. Forest Service programs to prevent water pollution, improve the health of watersheds, and ensure investments benefit downstream communities.

What I believe: In Colorado and the West, our economy and way of life are tied to the stewardship of our forests and watersheds. I will work to pass the Headwaters Protection Act to help protect these resources.

4. IN THE NEWS THIS WEEK

  • I joined 40 of my Senate Democratic colleagues to urge the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem to follow the law and uphold the rights of DACA holders. Dreamers are active members of our communities – they should be protected from intimidation, arrest, and deportation by immigration enforcement.
  • Former Denver Mayor Webb said it perfectly: Colorado is leading the nation in the fight against cancer and pioneering early cancer detection research. We must pass the Medicare Multi-Cancer Early Detection Screening Coverage Act to expand access to life-saving early cancer detection technology.
