Dear Friend,
Twenty-four years ago, terrorists attacked the United States – seeking to shake the very foundation of our country.
And twenty-four years ago, we came together as a nation, united against terrorism, as one people.
At a time when our country has never been so deeply divided, and domestic terrorism strikes even in safe havens – high schools, universities, churches, and homes, I often think of our need for unity, to see the best in each other instead of the worst.
In the wake of Wednesday’s tragic news, my wife Susan and I are mourning alongside the entire Evergreen High School community. We are sending strength to the victims, and we pray they make a full recovery. This is a profoundly difficult time for the entire student body, parents, teachers, and administrators. I am deeply grateful for the Jefferson County law enforcement officers and first responders who arrived on the scene in mere minutes and undoubtedly saved lives.
We are also thinking of Charlie Kirk’s family, his wife Erika, and his two small children, whose lives changed forever in an instant of horrible political violence.
In 2011, my friend and colleague, Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, was shot along with 18 other individuals at a constituent meeting. Congressman Steve Scalise was shot at a Congressional baseball game practice in 2017. Since then, political violence has continued to spread: the attempted kidnapping of Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, two assassination attempts on President Donald Trump, an arson attack at the home of Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, and the assassination of Minnesota lawmaker, Melissa Hortman.
Our founders fought and died for an idea: freedom. Freedom should mean voicing our political beliefs without fear of violence, safely worshiping in a church, synagogue, or mosque, and sending our kids to school knowing they will come home to us at the end of the day.
For the sake of our children and our nation, we must once again unite against the forces that seek to erode our democratic foundation, divide us as a nation, and turn us against our neighbors.
Take care of yourself,
Michael
