Meeting with Coloradans in Pagosa Springs and Durango

What I did: Last week, I traveled through Southwest Colorado to see how Coloradans are working to improve their communities and learn what I can do to help.

Meeting with communities affected by recent flooding: I visited Pagosa Springs to see firsthand the devastation from the recent, unprecedented flooding. I am grateful to the local leaders working tirelessly to keep Southwest Colorado communities safe as they begin to rebuild and recover from the floods. My thoughts are with the communities affected, and I remain ready to offer federal assistance if needed. Resources for those affected by the flooding can be found here.

Visiting the site of the Enterprise gas spill: In December 2024, an Enterprise pipeline cracked and spilled nearly 100,000 gallons of gasoline on Southern Ute Tribal land, making it the biggest refined gas spill recorded in Colorado. I met with Southern Ute Tribal leaders and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment at the site of the spill to discuss ongoing cleanup efforts to protect nearby water resources and the Animas River. One of my top priorities is ensuring the health and safety of our communities so our Tribal members and all Coloradans can thrive.

Discussing early childcare with local leaders: Every day, I hear from parents across Colorado who are struggling to find affordable childcare. I was glad to speak with leaders in La Plata County about how we can meet the need for affordable local childcare in their communities. I believe Colorado can be the best place to raise a family, and I look forward to continuing to work with local leaders to make that a reality.

2. Thank You for Coming to My Virtual Town Hall

What happened:
This week, I spoke with hundreds of Coloradans at a virtual town hall about the Republican government shutdown and other issues affecting our state. In case you missed it, you can watch the full town hall here. Thank you to everyone who showed up to make your voices heard.

What I believe: The best part of my job is speaking with constituents about the issues that matter most to them. As we continue to navigate the current government shutdown and the challenges it poses for Colorado, I will keep fighting for our state with every tool at my disposal. My office remains open and available to assist Coloradans throughout the government shutdown. For more resources to help during the shutdown, please visit my website.

3. IN THE NEWS THIS WEEK

  • I urged U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Brooke Rollins to release billions of dollars in funding to ensure Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits continue in November. USDA recently instructed states to stop processing SNAP benefits for November, a choice that could devastate millions of families who rely on the program – including over 580,000 Coloradans.
  • demanded that Department of Defense Acting Inspector General Steven Stebbins investigate the Trump Administration’s deployments of active-duty and National Guard troops to American cities. President Trump’s use of the U.S. military as civilian law enforcement in U.S. states is not only illegal but also undermines military readiness, wastes taxpayers’ funds, dangerously politicizes the military, and creates national security risks by diverting defense funding and personnel from their core purposes.
