Hello! And welcome to a special, early edition of Highs and Lows in time for the 4th of July. Well, the Big Beautiful Bill gets the attention this week.

Let me tell you the high. I kept saying in the House that one of the reasons to be in the Senate is you get to be more involved with legislation. And I will just tell you, a high for me and my team this week is we were deeply involved in shaping this bill, particularly on the energy portion of it. Working on that, finding consensus with my colleagues, many of which with very different opinions, was a real high for me and I was really pleased with that portion of the bill.

The low, we had over 27 hours of continuous voting. That is a long time and I'm not sure that is the best way to get our minds as sharp and thoughtful as possible. Of course, not everything in the bill is perfect.

Wishing you a safe, joyful, and meaningful Fourth of July.

Senator Curtis shared the following statement after voting in favor of the Big Beautiful Bill, landmark legislation that secures the border, delivers permanent tax relief for Utah families, and gives business certainty on energy policy:

“The Big Beautiful Bill delivers for Utahns. It secures the border, provides permanent tax relief for working families, and strengthens our military. I’m grateful to Leader Thune and Finance Chair Crapo for including my changes to the energy credits—key for business certainty and for Utah’s energy future. I look forward to the House sending it to the President before the Fourth.”

This week, the Bureau of Land Management officially transferred a wildland fire engine to the Tooele County Fire Department. Senator Curtis shared his appreciation for this example of federal and local government working together.

“This week, the BLM transferred a Type 6 wildland fire engine to the Tooele County Fire District through its Rural Fire Readiness Program,” said Senator Curtis. It’s a practical step that will help local crews respond more effectively to wildfires in the West Desert and surrounding communities. When rural Utahns are the first to respond to wildfires, they deserve every tool possible to protect our land, homes, and neighbors. Proud to see federal resources reinforcing local efforts.”

Sometimes, federal errors create years-long headaches for constituents—and resolving them requires persistence and advocacy. One Utahn spent more than six years trying to convince the IRS that they were, in fact, alive. After exhausting multiple avenues, they turned to Senator Curtis’s office. With their permission, we’re sharing their story to show how our casework team can help untangle even the most stubborn challenges.
