Hey, highs and lows! I'm trying to smile for my high, but it's getting blown up… We were supposed to be headed home today for what I think is a pretty needed break. We're all getting on each other's nerves back here in D.C., but at this point, nobody quite knows when we will be able to get out of here.
The low, the wildfires are very problematic. My heart, my team's heart, goes out to all of you affected by it. Our county commissioners, we're trying the best we can to connect and to stay in touch with them. Everybody, please follow local law enforcement and any advisories that we have. Let's be as safe as we can. We'll continue working on some really important legislation here in Washington for wildfires.
Also, as we go into the August break, I’d encourage you to share this newsletter with friends and family to sign up for Highs and Lows. We will be using August to go over a number of the things that we’re working on here and try to keep you informed the best we can. I hope you all have a great weekend!

In response to the escalating wildfire threat across Utah, Governor Cox has declared a state of emergency to unlock vital resources for firefighting efforts. Senator Curtis expressed deep gratitude to the more than 1,000 first responders working across the state. He also urged all Utahns to stay informed and prepared by using the latest tools available to track wildfire activity and access emergency updates.

Across Utah and the West, communities face real challenges with aging water systems, drought resilience, and growing demand. Senators Curtis and Gallego (D-AZ) introduced the bipartisan Water Infrastructure Modernization Act to increase the use of smart water technologies. The legislation provides $50 million in grant funding for community water systems to purchase and implement new water technologies, including those that can identify water loss, examine pipe integrity, detect leaks, prepare for severe weather, innovate water storage systems, and more.

Thursday was our summer interns last day — on National Intern Day no less — and Senator Curtis is grateful for the energy, ideas, and dedication they brought to the office. If you or someone you know is interested in interning with our team in the future, you can learn more at Curtis.senate.gov.

We need to confront wildfires with the urgency and unity they demand. In a PBS NewsHour segment, Senator Curtis appeared alongside Senator Padilla (D-CA) to discuss their bipartisan Fix Our Forests Act, transparency in government, and how Senators can work on bills across the aisle.
The bipartisan legislation would combat catastrophic wildfires, restore forest ecosystems, and make federal forest management more efficient and responsive. The comprehensive bill reflects months of bipartisan negotiations to find consensus on how to best accelerate and improve forest management practices, streamline environmental reviews, and strengthen partnerships between federal agencies, states, tribes, and private stakeholders.

This week, Senator Curtis met with leaders at the Utah World Trade Center working to advance our state’s global economic reach and representatives from the Eleanor Crook Foundation who are tackling global malnutrition with compassion and innovation.
