From the Hill to the Mountains

September 11 Commemoration

Our nation was forever changed on September 11, 2001. So many innocent Americans died that dreadful day, and so many Americans have given their lives in defense of our nation in the years since. Words cannot describe my gratitude for our first responders and members of our Armed Forces.

Each of us grieved and felt the shock of our vulnerability during the days and weeks following the attacks, but we also experienced something else as a nation. Our country learned of the great strength, bravery and character of our heroes.

Today, we still share a common bond and responsibility to stay vigilant and keep our great country safe. We must continue to express our appreciation to our first responders, members of our armed forces, our families and our neighbors. The most important thing we can do, as Americans, is to honor those we have lost by sharing their stories with future generations.

I join each of you in taking a moment to reflect and to remember all those whose lives were changed forever.

May God bless us all and may God bless the United States of America.

Military Service Academies

West Point

"Duty, Honor, Country"

This week, I am highlighting the oldest continuously-operating Army post in the United States.

This prestigious academy has been educating, training and inspiring leaders of character for more than 200 years.  West Point is an internationally recognized institution for academic, military and physical excellence. 

These leaders are prepared to provide selfless service to our Army and the nation.  Cadets who graduate as commissioned officers and serve the nation are our lasting legacy and are what makes West Point great.

West Point graduates include two Presidents of the United States, as well as the President of the Confederate States of America; three foreign heads of state; one Senator, two Governors; and four Congressman.  A total of 76 graduates have been awarded the Medal of Honor.  In addition, 18 NASA astronauts, three Heisman Trophy winners and two Cabinet Secretaries are West Point Alumni.  Multiple Generals and CEOS have degrees from “the Point”.
