From the Hill to the Mountains

If you can count your blessings, you can share your blessings.

When I was a kid growing up in Farmington, I recall my grandmother, Mama Kay, teaching us that if you can count your blessings, you can share your blessings.  We weren't wealthy in the traditional sense, but we were blessed with the riches of loving family and friends, a beautiful state to call home and the knowledge that we were a part of a statewide community with an unbreakable bond.  With that in mind, every Thanksgiving, Mama Kay would send us out to find someone who didn't have a place to go, and bring them back for dinner.  One year, I could not find a soul in town to bring home for dinner. Determined not to go back to Mama Kay empty handed, I went to my friend's house - where he had already had Thanksgiving dinner with his family - and convinced him to come with me for yet another dinner.

As this holiday season arrives, Gayle and I are reminded once again of the importance of family - the source of life’s greatest joys and its deepest bonds. Our families are the foundation of our country as well as the inspirational force in each of our lives.  Not only is this approach good for the soul but it makes West Virginia the best place to work, live and raise a family.

In fact, when visitors come to West Virginia, I jump at the chance to tell them we have more Veterans per capita than most any state in the nation. We have fought in more wars, shed more blood and lost more lives for the cause of freedom than most any state. We have always done the heavy lifting and never complained. We have mined the coal and forged the steel that built the guns, ships and factories that have protected and continue to protect our country to this day. I am so deeply proud of what West Virginians have accomplished and what they will continue to accomplish to protect the freedoms we hold dear. 

Throughout the year, we are tested as a national community. This holiday season let us pray for peace, safety and a greater understanding of one another.  May you spend this year’s waning days visiting loved ones, hunting with your kids and grandkids, renewing old ties and forging new relationships.
