This weekend, I stopped by the West Virginia Sports Legend annual dinner in Beckley to honor my dear friend, the legendary athlete and coach, Tex Williams. I also had the privilege of walking in Ripley's Fourth of July Parade. I hope you all had a happy and safe holiday.

Monday,  I hosted a roundtable discussion with clergy members in Beckley about how our religious values translate into protecting West Virginian’s healthcare. We discussed the lawsuit that the Attorney General of West Virginia joined that would allow insurance companies to once again deny coverage to West Virginians with pre-existing conditions. With nearly 800,000 West Virginians with pre-existing conditions, including 90,600 children, this impacts every family in West Virginia. West Virginians with cancer, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, asthma, women who are pregnant, and many other illnesses and conditions, will be directly affected. We cannot go back to a time when insurance companies played God and allow them to decide who will be insured and who will not. For a lot of West Virginians with pre-existing conditions, insurance coverage is the difference between life and death, and I will do everything I can to protect them.

Recently, Cris Hewett, a caseworker in my Martinsburg Office, was able to assist Mr. Lloyd Powell with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).  Mr. Powell’s tax refund was offset due to the VA charging him for a copayment on his prescription incorrectly.  This copayment was not paid and ultimately turned into the Department of Treasury.  Cris was able to work with the VA and Mr. Powell received his money back and his account is once again in good standing.  It is my distinct honor to be helpful to the brave service members, like Mr. Powell, who have provided an irreplaceable service to our great state and nation and forever deserve the recognition they receive.
