Urging the Department of Justice to Protect West Virginians with Pre-Existing Conditions

Last week I urged Attorney General Jeff Sessions to direct the Department of Justice to defend the Affordable Care Act in the pending suitTexas vs. United States — a case in which millions of Americans, including nearly 800,000 West Virginians, living with pre-existing conditions, are at risk of losing their healthcare coverage. The Attorney General of West Virginia has joined 19 other states in suing to allow insurance companies to once again deny coverage to West Virginians with pre-existing conditions.

I have held two roundtable discussions with Clergy in West Virginia on the issue of pre-existing conditions—touching specifically on the lawsuit that West Virginia’s Attorney General is waging against West Virginians with pre-existing conditions. This lawsuit was filed without comprehensive or meaningful outreach to West Virginia stakeholders – particularly the nearly 800,000 West Virginians with pre-existing conditions.

It’s alarming that the Department of Justice decided to abandon its obligation to defend the law and the constitutionality of protections for people with pre-existing conditions. The loss of these protections would be devastating in West Virginia, where nearly 40% of our residents have a pre-existing condition. We cannot go back to a time where insurance companies played God.

W.V. VA Medical Centers to Hold Suicide Prevention Training Workshop for Spiritual Leaders

The Beckley, Clarksburg, and Huntington VA Medical Centers are hosting a joint outreach training event for West Virginia spiritual leaders from faith-based communities to learn about Veteran suicide prevention and the benefits of the Veterans Health Administration.

The luncheon workshop will be Tuesday, July 31 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the West Virginia Capitol Complex. The event will take place in the Capitol Room, on the second floor of Building 7.

Roundtable to Discuss Supreme Court Nominee

On Friday, I hosted a roundtable with a broad group of constituents to discuss President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh.

I appreciate the West Virginians who joined me at Friday's roundtable. I take the responsibility to advise and consent on the President’s Supreme Court nominee very seriously. That’s why I hosted the roundtable, asked West Virginians to submit their thoughts to an email and set up a page for input on my website. It’s plain irresponsible to declare support for or opposition to any nominee within nine minutes of their announcement. I appreciate the constituent input I have received. I will continue to do my due diligence and encourage West Virginians to continue to share their thoughts with me throughout this process.

One of my Regional Coordinators, Michael Garcia, read to Energy Express students at Moorefield Elementary School. Energy Express is an outstanding summer reading and nutrition program that encourages students to express their creativity and confidence.

Regional Coordinator, Justin Ray, attended the 90th Birthday Celebration for John Tennant, a Korean War Veteran, former educator and dedicated public servant. I have always admired his patience, generosity, professionalism and compassion – qualities he passed on to his children and grandchildren. Happy Birthday, John!

West Virginia Spotlight

Girl Scout Troops of Gilmer County

Monday, September 3, Troops will be Ringing Bells for Rosie the Riveter at the Glenville City Park at 12:30 p.m., simultaneously with other troops at locations across the state. The Girls will also be recognized as the first national, official "Rosie the Riveter Girl Scout Troop" by Thanks! Plain and Simple (American Rosie Movement). The current Junior Girl Scouts (rising 5th and 6th graders) have worked very hard as a team during the last nine months to earn their Bronze Awards, awarded in May, for their work with Rosie the Riveters and for metal rationing and recycling.

Great work, ladies! Thank you for all you have accomplished and I wish you the very best for all you are certain to achieve in the future.

Recently, Kim Berry, a caseworker in my Fairmont Office was able to assist Mr. John Burgess with his appeal case with the Department of Veterans Affairs. Kim worked with the VA Regional Office, as well as the Board of Veterans’ Appeals to ensure that all of Mr. Burgess’s information regarding his service was received and reviewed in a timely manner. Our veterans have provided an irreplaceable service to our great state and nation, and we are all indebted to these brave men and women whose sacrifices help preserve the freedoms that we hold so dear. I stand clear in my commitment to serve those who served this country so bravely, and who continue to give back to our communities.
