On the Road

Last week I had the pleasure of speaking at the Executive Seminar for West Liberty University about leadership and ways to make a difference in our communities. I appreciate everyone in attendance for your excellent questions!

Senator Manchin speaks at West Liberty University.

One of my Regional Coordinators, Brian Aluise, attended a celebration for Wilbur "Bud" Cassell for his dedicated work with the Cass Scenic Railroad State Park for the last 55 years. Other than when he enlisted in the Army, Bud has lived in the beautiful Town of Cass all his life. He is a treasure within the state park system and if you're ever visiting the park, make sure to pay him a visit.

Key Federal Resources

When West Virginians compete, they win.

Below are a few grants that were recently awarded through the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA).  I encourage West Virginia communities to apply for federal funding opportunities, and will be happy to provide a letter of support for eligible applications.  For further information, please contact my Martinsburg office at 304-264-4626 or click here to email me.

  • West Virginia University, USDA, NIFA, Food Safety Outreach Program grant award will be used for The WV C.H.I.P. (Commercial/Home/Incubator-kitchens and Food Producers) Project.  It will allow for statewide Food Safety Modernization Act efforts and food producer services to expand to other agricultural service providers - including commercial/ home/incubator-kitchens & food producers.  This Project aims to address a knowledge gap in labeling, processing, and local supply chains by developing a hands-on experience in food hub activities from production, processing, labeling, marketing and distribution of local foods.  - $148,462.00 grant.
  • West Virginia University, USDA, NIFA, Organic Transitions Program grant award will be used for the purpose of overcoming barriers to transitioning small ruminants to organic production: Effects of feeding birdsfoot trefoil on parasite control, nutritional status and profitability.  Small ruminants provide a profitable niche for organic growers.  However, certain intestinal parasites, specifically gastrointestinal nematode infections, are the major factor limiting organic production.  - $499,817.00 grant.
