Roundtable Discussions for All Affected by the Government Shutdown

I remain committed to finding a solution that reopens the federal government and funds our border security to keep Americans safe.  I believe that federal workers should not pay the price for Congressional inaction, which is why I worked with my colleagues to introduce legislation – which was signed by the President and passed into law on January 16th – that guarantees back pay as soon as possible for federal workers who are furloughed or working without pay during the shutdown.  I know that does not help in the moment, though, so please click here for some resources available to you during this difficult time.  We will continue to update this list as we hear from other organizations.

Additionally, I have hosted three roundtable discussions (Fairmont, Martinsburg, and Parkersburg) so far for federal workers and all who have been affected by the shutdown. Stay up-to-date for future roundtables and town halls by checking my website and social media.

I had the privilege of speaking to our union members at the WV AFL-CIO Conference. It is no secret that our home state consists of the hardest working, most dedicated people in the country and it is vital that we continue the great progress we have made as a statewide community and invest in our working families.

Catholic Schools Week

To kick off the upcoming Catholic Schools Week (January 27 - February 2), I stopped by Sacred Heart Grade School in Charleston to talk to our future leaders about faith, leadership, and service.

Social Security Scam Alert

The Social Security Administration has become aware of reports of fraudulent telephone calls from individuals claiming to represent the Social Security Administration (SSA). In them, unknown callers are using threatening language to warn unknowing victims that they will be arrested or face other legal action if they fail to call a provided phone number or press the number indicated in the message to address the issue. In some instances, these unknown callers switch tactics and communicate that they want to help an individual with activating a suspended Social Security number. Such calls are a scam and are not coming from official SSA representatives.

You may report such calls to Social Security’s Office of the Inspector General by calling 1-800-269-0271 or submitting a report on the OIG website.

Historic Preservation Development Grants Available

The State Development Grant Program is for rehabilitation of properties that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places or a contributing property in a historic district or/and archaeological development of a site listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The funding source for this grant program is appropriated by the WV Legislature, through Lottery Funds.

Recently, Angie Walsh, a caseworker in my Martinsburg Office was able to assist Mr. Dale Chapman, with assistance in getting his Social Security Disability benefits. Mr. Chapman had injured his back 1993 while working in the mines. After surgery and the implantation of a spine stimulator he could no longer work. The Senator’s office worked with officials from the Social Security Administration and Mr. Chapman was approved for disability benefits.
