The Inclusion of Back Pay for Contractors Impacted by the Government Shutdown

While federal workers harmed by the government shutdown have since been compensated for their lost wages, federal contract employees – including janitorial, food, and security services workers – who were furloughed or forced to accept reduced work hours have not. I am a part of a bipartisan effort to urge the Appropriations Committee to include provisions to fix this wrong in upcoming appropriations legislation.

Urging the HHS Secretary to Empower Doctors to Stop Preventable Opioid Deaths

My colleagues and I recently encouraged Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Alex Azar to initiate a rulemaking process that will improve coordination of care and reduce the potential for accidental overdoses among recovering addicts. This rulemaking process would help give healthcare providers access to their patient’s complete medical history, including substance abuse, allowing them to provide the appropriate care. It is consistent with the approach proposed in theProtecting Jessica Grubb’s Legacy Act that I introduced last Congress.

More than $429K Announced for WVU Alzheimer's Research Program

As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I am proud to announce that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has awarded $429,880 to West Virginia University’s neurological disorder clinical research program, in order to study Early Alzheimer’s disease.

Alzheimer’s is a terrible disease that effects far too many West Virginians and Americans.  Since my first days as Governor, I have also been a big supporter of studying this disease, so that we can protect and care for, both our current and future seniors. With increased investment in research and innovative clinical programs, we can and will develop better treatment and prevention options for this disease. I am proud that our very own WVU is conducting the much needed research in this area.

Signing of the Bipartisan Public Lands Bill

This week I attended the White House’s Presidential bill-signing ceremony at which President Trump signed the John D. Dingell, Jr. Conservation, Management, and Recreation Act into law. The legislation permanently reauthorizes the Land and Water Conservation Fund, designates the Appalachian Forest Heritage Area, and increases the funding cap for the Wheeling National Heritage Area. It passed the U.S. Senate with a vote of 92-8 on February 12 and passed the U.S. House of Representatives with a vote of 363-62 on February 26.

I was proud to join colleagues on both sides of the aisle at the White House today as President Trump signed the John D. Dingell, Jr. Conservation, Management, and Recreation Act into law. This legislation is an important reminder that, when we work in a bipartisan way, the American people come out on top. This bipartisan package permanently reauthorizes the Land and Water Conservation Fund which has had immeasurable impacts on West Virginia. It also designates the Appalachian Forest Heritage Area and increases the funding cap for the Wheeling National Heritage Area.   In our state, we have been blessed with beautiful lands and our love of the outdoors is core to who we are as West Virginians.  I am proud this legislation will expand access and protect these lands for future generations to enjoy.
