From the Hill to the Mountains

Water Treatment Renovations in Calhoun County

As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I am proud to announce $1,000,000 from the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) for renovations to the water treatment system in Grantsville, which serves the majority of residents in Calhoun County. The ARC grant, which will be matched by $3,168,000 in other federal and local funds for a total of $4,168,000, will be used to renovate the local water treatment plant, construct a new ground water tank and make other improvements to the county’s aging water treatment infrastructure.

I don’t know anyone who doesn’t want clean water to drink. As our infrastructure ages, it is important to make the necessary improvements to our water treatment infrastructure so that every West Virginian has access to clean drinking water. I applaud ARC for their investment in bringing these vital resources to Calhoun County. As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I look forward to working with ARC and other organizations in the future to bring investments like these to our state.

Repairs to the Brooke Pioneer Trail

I am proud to announce $2,240,543 from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for the repair of Brooke County’s Pioneer Trail due to recent flood damage. The Brooke Pioneer Trail stretches from Wellsburg, West Virginia to Wheeling, West Virginia along the Ohio River and is a popular recreation area for the residents of West Virginia and visitors alike.

I applaud FEMA for their continued efforts to help rebuild West Virginia after recent flooding. The Brooke Pioneer Trail is a key tourist attraction and recreation area in our great state and it is important that we take measures to protect and repair it, so that it can be enjoyed by current residents, visitors, and many generations to come. As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee I will continue to work with FEMA so that all areas of West Virginia that are damaged from flooding or other natural disasters get the resources they need to rebuild.

Last week I was honored to meet law enforcement officers from WV and across the country who are training to become motorcycle operators at Yeager Airport. Thank you to Northwestern University's Center for Public Safety and Harley-Davidson for helping our brave officers help keep us safe!

Regional Coordinator Mary Jo Guidi attended a Reverse Job Fair in New Cumberland. With this unique opportunity, students ready to start their careers set up industry-specific booths to showcase their skills, portfolios, and talents to potential employers.

Economic Development Representative Ryan Thorn attended the grand opening of the new T-Hangars at the Morgantown Municipal Airport. This multimillion dollar investment will prove crucial to the continued success of the airport.

Ryan Thorn joins Morgantown Mayor Bill Kawecki, Monongalia County Commissioners Ed Hawkins and Sean Sikora, and other county stakeholders for the ribbon cutting of the new T-Hangars at Morgantown Municipal Airport.

Michael Canterbury contacted the Senator on April 27, 2018 for help obtaining his disability benefits due to a severe heart condition that gradually stopped him from being able to work. Caseworker for the Senator, Angie Walsh, made an inquiry to Social Security and as a result, Mr. Canterbury received a favorable decision in early April of this year.

SBA Economic Injury Disaster Loans Available in WV

The U.S. Small Business Administration announced that Economic Injury Disaster Loans are available to small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small businesses engaged in aquaculture and private nonprofit organizations located in West Virginia as a result of rain, flash flooding that began on July 21, 2018. Loans are available in the following counties: Brooke, Hancock, Marshall, Monongalia, Ohio, Preston, and Wetzel.

Loans are also available for small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small businesses engaged in aquaculture and private nonprofit organizations located in West Virginia as a result of the combined effects of excessive rain, flash flooding, Hurricane Florence and Hurricane Michael from April 1 through Dec.31, 2018. These loans are available in the following counties: Braxton, Cabell, Calhoun, Clay, Doddridge, Fayette, Gilmer, Greenbrier, Jackson, Kanawha, Lewis, Mason, Nicholas, Pleasants, Pocahontas, Putnam, Randolph, Ritchie, Roane, Tyler, Upshur, Webster, Wirt and Wood.

Applicants may apply online using the Electronic Loan Application (ELA) via SBA’s secure website at DisasterLoan.sba.gov.

EPA Announces Availability of $87 Million in Funding to Improve Drinking Water for Schools and Small and Disadvantaged Communities

This week, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the availability of nearly $87 million in grant funding to assist states, tribes, and territories with improving drinking water.
