MANCHIN, CAPITO ANNOUNCE APPROVAL OF TRADE ADJUSTMENT ASSISTANCE APPLICATION FOR LUKE MILL WORKERS

The Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) application for Verso was approved by the U.S. Department of Labor.

This is helpful news for the all of the 675 hardworking Luke Mill employees and their families who are devastated by the closing of the mill. I’m glad West Virginia and Maryland delegations could come together and makes sure the TAA application was approved for these employees. My heart goes out to the 675 hard-working employees and their families who have been devastated by this news, as well as the many local businesses who work to support the mill.  I will do everything in my power to help attract good-paying jobs in this region. The workers at this plant are to be commended for their years of dedicated service, and we must all come together to support them and their families.

MANCHIN STORAGE HUB BILL PASSES SENATE ENERGY AND NATURAL RESOURCES COMMITTEE

An Appalachian Storage Hub would have immeasurable benefits for the Appalachian region and our country as a whole. Not only would it be an economic driver for the region but it would also increase our national and economic energy security. With countries like Russia and China continuing to leverage their energy resources for political influence, it is more important than ever for the United States to secure energy independence. In West Virginia we have been blessed with an abundance of natural resources and are well-suited to provide this energy security for the rest of the nation. I’m pleased to see my Appalachian Energy for National Security Act pass the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, and I will continue working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to ensure it becomes law.

MANCHIN: $1.4 BILLION IN OPIOID SETTLEMENT SHOULD BE SPENT TO FIGHT THE OPIOID EPIDEMIC

Out of the 21 million Americans who need substance use disorder treatment, only an estimated 3.8 million, or 18 percent were able to access it. People in rural areas face even more difficulties accessing treatment, with 92 percent of substance abuse treatment facilities located in urban areas. That is unacceptable. The funds received from this settlement should be allocated to groups addressing the national opioid epidemic through addiction treatment centers and other projects aimed at helping communities in states like West Virginia recover from the opioid epidemic. 

The opioid crisis has ravaged our country, especially my state of West Virginia, which has been ground zero in the battle against this epidemic. The Reckitt Benckiser Group has settled with the United States for $1.4 billion for their inaccurate marketing of Suboxone as an opioid withdrawal option that's less likely to be abused than others on the market. We must do more as a nation to address this epidemic, and using this settlement to do so is a great start.

MANCHIN, BRAUN INTRODUCE THE FDA OPIOID LABELING ACCURACY ACT

In the United States, we consume 80 percent of the world’s opioid production and in 2017, one single year, over 70,000 people died due to drug overdoses. These statistics are unacceptable. As one of the hardest hit states, West Virginia has been on the front lines of the opioid epidemic, which is why I have introduced this bill today with Senator Braun to address how the FDA approves opioid prescriptions for treating different types of pain. Addressing the opioid epidemic has always been my top priority and I will continue to fight for legislation that helps West Virginians and our country fight this epidemic and I look forward to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to pass this bill.

MANCHIN, CAPITO ANNOUNCE $568K FOR WATER INFRASTRUCTURE

Updating and investing in West Virginia’s water infrastructure is critical, especially in the rural areas of our state where access to clean drinking water is difficult for residents. These investments will help expand drinking water containment and delivery systems so that all West Virginians have access to clean drinking water, no matter where they live. As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I will continue to fight for investments in West Virginia’s infrastructure to ensure that West Virginians have access to basic resources like clean drinking water.

MANCHIN, CAPITO ANNOUNCE FUNDING FOR MARSHALL UNIVERSITY RESEARCH

West Virginia has the highest prevalence of cardiovascular disease in the nation with 14.6% of West Virginians being diagnosed with cardiovascular diseases. To address this, we must ensure that cardiovascular research is well funded so that West Virginians and Americans can reduce their risk of cardiovascular diseases. As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I will continue to fight for research funding that helps West Virginians live healthier, fuller lives.

MANCHIN, CAPITO ANNOUNCE $1 MILLION FOR WVU SCHOLARSHIPS

I was proud to announce a grant of $1,000,000 from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to West Virginia University (WVU) Research Corporation. The funding will support 120 annual scholarships to approximately 40 students pursuing B.S. degrees in computer and information sciences with specialization in cybersecurity.

Cybersecurity is an incredibly important field in securing our nation against domestic and foreign threats. West Virginia University is a great institution and will provide some of the best educated possible as future cybersecurity specialists of America. I look forward to seeing the work of these graduates and as a member of the Appropriations Committee, will continue to fight for funding that benefits West Virginia.

MANCHIN, CAPITO ANNOUNCE MORE THAN $8.4 MILLION FOR HEALTHCARE ACROSS WEST VIRGINIA

I was proud to announce $8,434,399 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). This funding provides immunizations and vaccines for children across West Virginia and prepares hospitals for emergency situations.

In order to prepare our hospitals and clinics for emergency response, they must have the necessary equipment and proper medical supplies so they are able to respond quickly and efficiently to any emergency situation that may arise. We must also work to ensure that parents have better accessibility to vaccines for their children. I am proud to have secured this funding which will be invested into hospitals, supplies and vaccinations throughout our great state.
