MANCHIN STATEMENT ON SHOOTING OF WV STATE TROOPER IN POCAHONTAS COUNTY

Gayle and I are deeply saddened to hear of the shooting of State Trooper Josh M. Tallman in the line of duty in Pocahontas County. We are always grateful for those who put themselves in harm’s way to protect and serve West Virginians. Trooper Tallman’s family, friends and loved ones will remain in our prayers and we pray for his speedy recovery.

MANCHIN, TOOMEY STATEMENT ON PRESIDENT'S SUPPORT FOR BACKGROUND CHECK BILL

This morning, we both separately discussed with President Trump our support for passing our bipartisan legislation to strengthen background checks to keep guns out of the hands of criminals, the dangerously mentally ill, and terrorists while respecting the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding gun owners and all Americans. The president showed a willingness to work with us on the issue of strengthening background checks.

Mass shootings and violent gun crimes are tragic American problems. It is past time for Congress to take action and the Manchin-Toomey background check legislation represents an opportunity to make actual bipartisan progress to help keep Americans safe.

MANCHIN APPLAUDS RAIL EXCURSION MANAGEMENT CO. ANNOUNCEMENT OF NEW TRAIN FOR RAILROAD DAYS FESTIVAL

I applaud Adam Auxier and Rail Excursion Management Co. on their decision to continue the 50 year tradition of the New River train and the Railroad Days festival in October. The trip from Huntington to Hinton in the fall truly showcases the beauty of West Virginia and brings joy and revenue to our state. For over a year, I have been working hard to make sure this annual festival would continue, first advocating for Amtrak to end their crushing regulations and fees to try to save Collis P. Huntington and then working with Amtrak and Rail Excursion Management to keep this West Virginia tradition alive. I look forward to the new Autumn Colors Express and will always support the Railroad Days festival however I can.

GROUP OF BIPARTISAN FORMER GOVERNORS RELEASE JOINT STATEMENT ON WHY THEY VOTED AGAINST BUDGET DEAL

We want to thank our colleagues, Chairman Shelby and Ranking Member Leahy, for all the work they and their staffs did to put this package together. We recognize that theirs was not an easy task, and we’re grateful that they were willing to work so hard to put it together. Having said that, as former Governors, we were responsible for setting a budget each year that was fiscally responsible to fund our priorities. That’s why today, we, as U.S. Senators, cannot bring ourselves to vote for this budget deal that does not put our country on a fiscally sustainable path. We cannot continue to ignore the fact that our country’s $22 trillion national debt is dangerous and unsustainable. We did not run our states this way, and it’s why, now as U.S. Senators, we feel strongly that we must lead by example and say that this is not the way to run our country either.

MANCHIN, GRAHAM INTRODUCE BILL TO STENGTHEN U.S. MANUFACTURERS

For far too long, West Virginia has been devastated by unfair trade practices. Our state has the best workers in the world, and all they need to come out on top is a level playing field. In order to get that, we must make changes to how we trade with other nations around the world. That’s why I’m joining my dear friend and colleague Senator Graham to introduce this straightforward but impactful legislation. This bill will give the President the authority to negotiate and enforce tariff agreements when other countries unfairly target our exports. It’s simple – countries that place tariffs on United States goods will receive the same tariff on goods from their country. We need make sure the deck isn’t stacked against the American worker, and this bill does exactly that.

MANCHIN ATTENDS PRESIDENT'S SIGNING OF THE LEGION ACT

I was honored to join the President at the White House today to sign the LEGION Act. All of our Veterans, no matter when they served, have answered their country’s call and served with honor and dignity. That’s why I introduced the LEGION Act, to make sure that all Veterans are able to join the American Legion and take advantage of this important and useful organization. As a member of the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, I will continue to fight for the Veterans who have sacrificed so much for our nation.
