Introducing the New Dedicated Job Search and Career Resource for West Virginians

Together with the Discover the Real West Virginia Foundation (DRWV) – an organization dedicated to diversifying and enabling West Virginia’s economic growth and success, and Jobcase – a social platform for the “future of work,” I am proud of the soft launch of DiscoverWVJobs.com, a new public-private collaboration to support workers and job seekers in West Virginia. The platform will provide improved access to career info, and directly match people to local jobs. It can be found at www.DiscoverWVJobs.com.

The official launch for the site will occur in the fall, offering even more jobs and other content from additional partners from across the state.

MANCHIN APPLAUDS FIVE-YEAR COOPERATIVE AGREEMENT FOR CONTINUED OPERATION OF THE GREEN BANK OBSERVATORY

Scientists at the Green Bank Observatory have made significant discoveries that have helped us better understand our universe. Just last week, WVU researchers helped discover a massive star that strains the limits of physics. That discovery wouldn’t have been possible without the research made possible at Green Bank. Today’s announcement of a five-year cooperative agreement for the continued operations of the Green Bank Observatory is a testament to the tremendous amount of research and data the Observatory provides to the global scientific community. For the past several years, I have been committed to ensuring Green Bank stays open for the next generation of young West Virginia scientists, and I applaud Associated Universities, Inc. and the National Science Foundation for their commitment to this incredible facility, and I will continue to support the Green Bank Observatory’s rich history of studying the cosmos.

MANCHIN SUPPORTS ANNUAL VETERANS BEAR HUNT

I reached out to the U.S. Forest Service as soon as I learned that our Veterans needed assistance to hunt on our public lands, and I’m glad to have helped these brave Veterans as they prepare to enjoy the long tradition of hunting in the beautiful mountains of Pendleton County. West Virginians and people across our nation should be able to enjoy hunting and recreational shooting while enjoying the outdoors. West Virginia has more Veterans per capita than most any other state, and it is an honor and privilege to help our Veterans in any way I can.

BIPARTISAN SENATORS INTRODUCE RESOLUTION DEDICATING SEPTEMBER AS CHILDHOOD CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

Last week when I was in West Virginia a student, Nick Spence, approached me with the idea to raise awareness about this terrible issue, which is why my fellow Senators and I introduced this resolution to dedicate September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. I am proud to help raise awareness around childhood cancer and the lives it effects every day.

MANCHIN URGES ATTORNEY GENERAL BARR TO ADDRESS STAFFING PRACTICES WITHIN BUREAU OF PRISONS

The letter said in part: “While I appreciate recent steps you have taken to address serious staffing issues within the Bureau of Prisons (BOP), I remain concerned about staffing levels and related policies which pose serious dangers to BOP staff and the inmates they are charged with protecting. Unfortunately, high staff turnover in key positions within BOP and the Department of Justice (DOJ) have made it incredibly difficult to make meaningful progress over the past few years. In addition to the transition you managed following the departure of Attorney General Sessions, BOP went almost a year without a full-time Director and the Mid-Atlantic Region which oversees West Virginia has had two different Directors.”

Manchin Calls on Congressional Leadership to Enact Full, Permanent Funding for Land and Water Conservation Fund

Last week I called on the leaders of the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives to include full, permanent funding for the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) in the fiscal year 2020 funding agreement. I was joined by Senators Tom Udall (D-NM), Cory Gardner (R-CO), Richard Burr (R-NC), Michael Bennet (D-CO), Steve Daines (R-MT), Jon Tester (D-MT), Martin Heinrich (D-NM), and Maria Cantwell (D-WA).

This letter follows Congress’ successful passage of permanent reauthorization for the LWCF in February. In April, Senator Manchin introduced the Land and Water Conservation Fund Permanent Funding Act to permanently fund the LWCF at a level of $900 million per year, using existing funds already set aside since the LWCF’s inception.

MANCHIN PRAISES MULTI-MILLION DOE INVESTMENT IN WVU

One of my main priorities as Ranking Member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee is to support and promote advancements in clean coal energy technologies. I am thrilled to see the Department of Energy recognize the world-class research conducted at WVU. These projects allow continued use of our domestic resources in an environmentally friendly way and will help reduce our vulnerability to foreign sources of rare earth elements.

MANCHIN INCLUDES FUNDING FOR KEY WEST VIRGINIA PRIORITIES IN SPENDING BILLS

I am pleased that the committee has approved appropriations bills which provide West Virginia funding for some of the state’s top priorities: Corridor H, rural broadband, combatting the opioid crisis and addressing youth homelessness. As we continue our work in the Appropriations Committee I will fight for West Virginia in the final budget for 2020 and for a responsible budget that puts West Virginia first.

MANCHIN, CAPITO ANNOUNCE MORE THAN $5.8 MILLION FOR ECONOMIC INVESTMENTS ACROSS WEST VIRGINIA

Investing in infrastructure and creating jobs for West Virginians is essential to improving the lives of all residents across our state. By expanding wastewater treatment systems, we are ensuring the creation of new jobs, a boost in our economy and a funding increase for WorkForce West Virginia CIP that will help West Virginia workers remain competitive in the job market. As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I will continue to advocate for economic opportunities that benefit West Virginia.

West Virginia mothers and children deserve the best care possible, which is why as a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I am proud to see HRSA investing in our communities through this funding. When we invest in our future generations through programs like MIECHV, we are ensuring the success of generations to come.

MANCHIN, CAPITO ANNOUNCE MORE THAN $2.2 MILLION FOR SUBSTANCE USE DISORDER TREATMENT IN WEST VIRGINIA

Every person and community in West Virginia has been devastated by the opioid epidemic that has ravaged our state. While we have several facilities and programs aimed at combatting substance use disorder across the state, we still have a need for substance use disorder treatment and recovery services through our Medicaid providers. I am glad that CMS is investing in West Virginia with funding to strengthen treatment and recovery programs in West Virginia. As your Senator, fighting against the opioid epidemic and helping fellow West Virginians have always been and will continue to be my top priorities.

MANCHIN, CAPITO ANNOUNCE INFRASTRUCTURE FUNDING TO REPAIR DAMAGE AFTER STORM

West Virginians have spoken out about the state of our infrastructure and it’s clear, they want better than the current predicament. This funding will help West Virginia fix highways in Hampshire, Hardy, Mineral and Morgan counties and roads in the Monongahela National Forest, both damaged by flooding, so that we can continue to rebuild as a state. I look forward to witnessing the progress made possible by this funding, and as a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I will continue to fight for funding that helps West Virginia fix our roads.

MANCHIN ANNOUNCES $132K FOR PRESERVATION OF HAPPY RETREAT IN CHARLES TOWN, WEST VIRGINIA

I am glad to see the National Park Service is recognizing the importance of the great history of Happy Retreat to West Virginia and the nation through this funding that will renovate such an incredible building. Understanding our history and heritage is important because it teaches us about the key lessons and achievements from the generations before us. I applaud the National Park Service for putting a spotlight on the history of West Virginia and know that this partnership will help preserve the legacy of West Virginia. As Ranking Member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee I’ll continue advocating for resources to preserve our West Virginia treasures.
