By Senator Joe Manchin

Over the last several months I have worked alongside my colleague Sen. Shelley Moore Capito to draft legislation to designate the New River Gorge National River as the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. I am excited to join with Sen. Capito for the introduction of S. 2555, the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve Designation Act which starts the legislative process to establish West Virginia’s first National Park....Click here to read the full op-ed.

This week I was honored to speak via Skype with officials who represent many of our top West Virginia-based oil and natural gas producers. Whether it was as your Governor or now as your Senator, I have always said that we need an all-of-the-above energy portfolio to ensure reliable electric grid and keep our economy humming. That includes coal, oil, natural gas, hydro, wind, solar – everything. That’s why as Ranking Member of the Energy and Natural Resources Committee, I am working with my bipartisan colleagues to ensure investment in technologies will help reduce our carbon emissions to address the threat of climate change, while also ensuring that the affordable and abundant coal and natural gas continue to play a role in our energy future.

Toyota Motor Manufacturing, West Virginia, Inc. has been home to many outstanding leaders throughout the years and I am certain this tradition of excellence will continue for many years to come. Once again I thank Leah Curry for her leadership as President of the company and I proudly extend my best wishes to her as she takes on her role in her home state of Indiana. It is also an honor to welcome the new president, Srini Matam. He's been with Toyota for nearly 20 years and brings a wealth of expertise along with him.

I was proud to have a flag, flown over our U.S. Capitol, presented to the staff of the Tucker County Emergency Services Support Facility in Davis. I’m thankful for our EMS professionals and the life-saving work that they do every day.

My staff is presenting certificates of recognition on my behalf in honor of National Support Your Local Chamber of Commerce Day. Below, Regional Coordinator Brian Aluise presented a certificate to Matt Ballard, President and CEO of the Charleston Area Alliance. I am truly grateful to all of our local Chambers of Commerce for all they accomplish for our communities each and every day.

HOW MAY WE HELP YOU?

To request assistance from my case team, click here.

As your U.S. Senator, I am proud to be your voice with government agencies during your time of need. My goal is for me and my staff to provide the best possible customer service for every West Virginian who contacts me needing assistance. While I have no direct jurisdiction in legal or administrative matters of any federal, state, or local agency, I welcome the opportunity to assist you in any way possible and to assure that full consideration is given to your case. See one of our recent success stories below:

Mr. James Elmore of Hedgesville contacted my office for help obtaining funds due to him from the Transportation Security Administration for contract work performed during Hurricane Harvey cleanup in 2017.  After an audit of his account was performed in February 2018, it was determined that Mr. Elmore was due additional funds. Since that time he had been unable to get information about the status of his payment. After Caseworker Cris Hewett contacted the TSA, Mr. Elmore’s case was immediately escalated for payment.

Social Security Phone Scam - Learn How to Protect Yourself

Social Security employees do occasionally contact people--generally those who have ongoing business with the agency--by telephone for business purposes. However, Social Security employees will never threaten a person or promise a Social Security benefit approval, or increase, in exchange for information. In those cases, the call is fraudulent and people should not engage with the caller. If a person receives these calls, he or she should report the information to the OIG Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271 or online at https://oig.ssa.gov/report.

To watch a PSA about the scam, click here or visit www.ssa.gov for more information.

Social Security has recently worked with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the Federal Trade Commission to create a new fraud prevention placemat to help you avoid Social Security scams. You can order free copies of the placemat to use at dining venues, or to share with friends and family. The placemat is in English on one side and Spanish on the other side.
