Introducing the New Dedicated Job Search and Career Resource for West Virginians

Together with the Discover the Real West Virginia Foundation (DRWV) – an organization dedicated to diversifying and enabling West Virginia’s economic growth and success, and Jobcase – a social platform for the “future of work,” I am proud of the soft launch of DiscoverWVJobs.com, a new public-private collaboration to support workers and job seekers in West Virginia. The platform will provide improved access to career info, and directly match people to local jobs. It can be found at www.DiscoverWVJobs.com.

The official launch for the site will occur in the fall, offering even more jobs and other content from additional partners from across the state.

Celebrating National Newspaper Week

For as long as our great nation has existed, newspapers have been part of the fabric that strengthens our democracy and makes our communities stronger.

Before James Madison became our 4th U.S. President, he wrote the Bill of Rights and enshrined the freedom of the press into the First Amendment of the Constitution. The First Amendment guarantees the unabridged freedom of speech and has allowed newspapers to act as the “Fourth Estate,” watching over our three branches of government holding our government and elected officials accountable.

From day to day and week to week, our newspapers deliver the information that keeps our residents well-informed of what is happening around the state so that they can make thoughtful decisions and engage in our communities.

During Newspaper Week, we recognize the community service newspapers and their employees have provided throughout the history of our country, and the great work they continue to do today.

From the Hill to the Mountains

MANCHIN, SENATORS STAND WITH MINERS & RETIREES AS THEY DEMAND ACTION TO PROTECT PENSIONS AND HEALTHCARE

The Miners’ Pension Fund alone, a critical plan which covers 82,000 retired miners – 25,000 in West Virginia - and 20,000 full vested current workers, is projected to become insolvent by 2022. If one major coal company goes bankrupt soon, the timeline for pension fund insolvency is significantly sooner. By September 2020 coal miners could see drastic cuts to their benefits if we don’t do something now. If the Miners’ Pension Fund becomes insolvent, a snowball effect will happen, with other pension plans following suit. It has been 285 days since I introduced the American Miners Act, which would protect miners’ pensions from becoming collateral during coal mine bankruptcies. We must act now. That’s why I’m joining my colleagues today – to call for the passage of my legislation that will ensure our miners and retirees can retire and live peacefully without the constant worry of losing their hard-earned pensions.

MANCHIN STATEMENT ON THE INTENT TO WITHDRAW U.S. TROOPS IN SYRIA AND THE TURKISH INVASION OF SYRIA

The announcement of the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Syria is a terrible miscalculation. We are abandoning our allies who have worked together with U.S. forces to establish stability in the region and wipe out ISIS. The invasion of Northern Syria by Turkey, an area controlled by our Kurdish allies, is what happens when the United States shrinks from its responsibility as a world leader. This puts future alliances and partnerships in jeopardy if we don’t hold up our end of the bargain. We are allowing an ally to be attacked and I believe this is a grave mistake.

MANCHIN APPLAUDS DOT RURAL TRANSPORTATION INITIATIVE

Since 2017, I have advocated as a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee for the DOT to provide equal funding between rural and urban areas and to create an office or position that would focus on the needs of rural communities and states. I thank Secretary Chao for listening to these calls and applaud the DOT ROUTES Initiative. This initiative addresses the transportation challenges we face in West Virginia and other rural states, and will create more economic development for our state. I look forward to working with Secretary Chao in the future to continue working on programs that benefit West Virginia.

MANCHIN SENDS FCC CHAIRMAN MORE SPEED TEST RESULTS FROM ACROSS WEST VIRGINIA TO HIGHLIGHT NEED FOR PUBLIC FEEDBACK SYSTEM

While I am encouraged to hear that your agency is planning to implement a formal public feedback mechanism to improve broadband coverage maps, the people of West Virginia need help now.  Until a more viable process is established, I will be providing you with real coverage data from people on the ground in West Virginia and a brief description of the challenges they face personally, professionally, and economically as a result of their unreliable broadband service.

RANKING MEMBER MANCHIN HOSTS NEW RIVER GORGE NATIONAL PARK AND PRESERVE PUBLIC MEETING

We had a productive conversation about the future of the New River Gorge. West Virginians take great pride in our outdoor heritage and particularly the New River Gorge National River. The New River Gorge National Park and Preserve Designation Act will bring renewed recognition to a cherished West Virginia playground. The next step is a hearing in the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee. As Ranking Member of the Committee, I will bring the ideas and concerns we discussed today with me back to Washington as I work to ensure this bill becomes law.

MANCHIN, CAPITO ANNOUNCE MORE THAN $7.9 MILLION FOR WORKFORCE AND ECONOMIC INVESTMENTS IN WEST VIRGINIA

The POWER grants are a great investment in West Virginia and I am glad that the ARC is serious about helping coal communities across our state with this funding. These investments will help create the jobs, services and infrastructure needed to attract new industries to our communities, help heal our state from the opioid epidemic and job loss from declining coal jobs, and get more West Virginians back to work. I look forward to witnessing the positive impact of these POWER grants on our communities and economy.

MANCHIN, CAPITO ANNOUNCE $1.7 MILLION FOR HEALTH CENTERS IN WEST VIRGINIA

This funding will provide essential support to help ensure that all West Virginians have access to the healthcare they deserve. By improving our health centers, patients will receive access to quality and affordable healthcare across our great state, no matter where they live. As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I will continue to fight to support health centers so that West Virginians can live healthy, safe lives.

MANCHIN, CAPITO ANNOUNCE MORE THAN $2.7 MILLION TO SUPPORT WEST VIRGINIA FIREFIGHTERS

Our firefighters protect and serve our communities every day. This funding will help multiple fire departments across the state receive the resources needed to do their jobs and take care of their fellow West Virginians. I am glad to see this funding support our fire departments and thank our first responders for their hard, selfless work.
