MURRAY ENERGY DECLARES BANKRUPTCY, MANCHIN URGES PASSAGE OF HIS BILL TO SAVE HEALTHCARE AND PENSIONS

Following Murray Energy's bankruptcy announcement, I urged the passage of my legislation, the American Miners Act, that would protect coal miners’ healthcare and pensions.

It’s a sad day when West Virginia workers and their families can lose everything they’ve worked for due to another corporate bankruptcy. Today’s announcement that Murray Energy will file for bankruptcy underscores the urgent need to protect the hard-earned pensions and health care of West Virginia’s coal miners. Today’s announcement means an additional 14,000 miners are at risk of losing their healthcare benefits and it will gut the pensions of 82,000 coal miners and their families. Instead of going insolvent in 2022, the UMWA pension fund will go insolvent next year. The time is now for McConnell to stop using our coal miners as a bargaining chip, and pass the American Miners Act to protect miners from losing their hard-earned healthcare and pension.

MANCHIN INTRODUCES SLAP ACT TO PROTECT AMERICAN WORKERS' PENSION PLANS

This week I introduced the Stop Looting American Pensions (SLAP) Act, legislation that would protect American worker’s pensions. For far too long, American greed has influenced Wall Street firms that have taken over companies, cut wages and paid executives large bonuses while walking away from their pension obligations for their employees and retirees.  

Every paycheck, 10.6 million hardworking men and women take home less pay and instead invest in their pension plan with their employer. Workers expect the wages they have contributed to be there when they retire, as they were promised. But under current law, worker’s pensions aren’t protected, and executive and investment firms exploit bankruptcy law for their own benefit. That it isn’t right.

MANCHIN STATEMENT ON THE U.S. SPECIAL OPERATIONS FORCES RAID IN SYRIA

I want to congratulate the President and his national security team on their efforts towards planning and executing this mission. Today the world is a safer place because of the work of our Special Forces. Last night they completed a raid that resulted in the death of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, a known terrorist and Islamic State leader. Our Special Forces are the best of the best and I want to thank them for keeping our country safe every day. This successful raid, with no U.S. casualties, proves what I have said all along, that our intelligence community and military continue to be the best in the world. This operation is a significant win in the fight against ISIS and I’m grateful to our brave service members and intelligence officers who make sacrifices everyday so they can faithfully serve our great nation. This enemy is gone, but we must maintain our vigilance and support the U.S. intelligence and military communities as we continue to confront the threat of terrorism across the world.

MANCHIN: PROUD TO SEE NEW RIVER TRAIN TRADITION CONTINUE WITH AUTUMN COLORS EXPRESS
I am proud to see the Autumn Colors Express up and running this fall after all of the difficulties that have occurred over the last few years. For more than 50 years, the New River Train has been at the heart of West Virginia’s proud railroading history as the focal point of Railroad Days and I am proud to see the traditions carry on with the Autumn Colors Express this year. I wish everyone a safe and fun ride for this fall’s Autumn Colors Express and look forward to continuing this time honored tradition for years to come.

HOUSE COMMITTEE PASSES MINERS HEALTHCARE AND PENSION PROTECTIONS, MANCHIN DEMANDS MITCH MCCONNELL BRING AMERICAN MINERS ACT UP FOR A VOTE

I applaud the House Natural Resources Committee for passing legislation today that will secure healthcare and pensions of our hardworking coal miners. West Virginians understand how hard our coal miners have worked to power our great country. Now, Congress must act to secure their hard earned pensions and healthcare. My commonsense, bipartisan legislation, the American Miners Act, would ensure our miners receive the healthcare and pensions they earned over their career in the mines. I know that President Trump supports our coal miners and their families. But, our miners are at the mercy of Mitch McConnell who has refused to move common sense legislation to protect the miners. That’s why today I am calling on Mitch McConnell to bring up the American Miners Act immediately. A pension is a promise and we must act now to protect the pensions and healthcare our miners have earned and deserve.

MANCHIN SPEAKS WITH FIRST LADY MELANIA TRUMP ON COMBATING THE OPIOID CRISIS

Today’s bipartisan discussion with the First Lady about the opioid crisis that is ravaging our country was positive and productive. We celebrated the first anniversary of the SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Act being signed into law, which includes resources for states like West Virginia that are on the frontlines of the opioid epidemic; we also discussed possible programs to address the opioid crisis. I believe that in order to effectively combat the opioid epidemic, we must all work together in a bipartisan way. I look forward to continuing my work with the Administration to make meaningful steps towards healing and recovering our communities across the nation and in West Virginia.

MANCHIN APPLAUDS DOE, USDA JOINT EFFORT TO INCREASE RURAL ENERGY TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT AND DEPLOYMENT  

I’m pleased to see this formal partnership between the DOE and USDA and the recognition of the benefits of potential energy infrastructure projects in rural America. Appalachia is a prime example of an area with abundant natural resources and opportunity, and I applaud this creation of a working group to collaborate on solutions to revitalize rural communities and better utilize energy and natural resources. This is an important development for rural West Virginia, the greater Appalachian region, and our entire nation. A natural gas liquids storage hub in Appalachia, for example, would serve as a significant economic driver and bolster our national security. I look forward to the findings of the working group’s report and will continue working closely with the Administration to ensure the proposed Appalachian Storage Hub becomes a reality.

We have been focusing on climate solutions in this committee, and we need a variety of solutions to make the differences that we need. But energy efficiency really is the low hanging fruit. I think we’ve all acknowledged that. Multiple studies have shown that energy efficiency is cheaper than investing in any other type of new generation – it is truly the cheapest kilowatt out there. It’s also readily available – there are lots of opportunities to improve efficiency in buildings, industry, and transportation.

MANCHIN ANNOUNCES MORE THAN $9 MILLION FOR CONSTELLIUM

West Virginians are hardworking people that have powered and built our military through manufacturing for over a century. I’m proud of the fact that this investment in the Ravenswood facility ensures that aluminum that comes from Jackson County will continue to be used in equipment that protects American troops all over the world.   This funding invests in West Virginia’s economy, creates good paying jobs, boosts economic development and improves the lives of all residents and businesses across West Virginia. In a time in which very little gets done in Washington because of divisive partisanship, I am proud to have worked with Senator Capito, Chairman Shelby and Ranking Member Leahy to have this included in last year’s appropriations bill.  As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee and the Senate Armed Services Committee, I will continue to advocate for opportunities like this for West Virginia.

Investing in infrastructure is essential to improving the lives of all residents across West Virginia. These investments will help expand drinking water containment and wastewater treatment systems so that all West Virginians have access to clean water and sanitation, no matter where they live. As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I will continue to fight for West Virginians to receive the services they need and deserve.

MANCHIN ANNOUNCES MORE THAN $3.1 MILLION FOR YEAGER AIRPORT 2015 LANDSLIDE REIMBURSEMENT

As the largest airport in the state, Yeager Airport serves as an important gateway to our beautiful state and a vital transportation hub for our state and economy. As a pilot, I know how critical Yeager Airport is to the entire state. Since the devastating landslide in 2015, I have worked closely with airport officials, the FAA, and FEMA to secure the funding necessary for Yeager to rebuild its runways and continue servicing West Virginians and our visitors. As a member of the Transportation Appropriations Subcommittee, I included language to allow the FAA to provide additional funding to the airport, and as a member of the Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee, I made sure that FEMA did its part, too. I always have our West Virginia airports in mind and will continue to ensure they receive the funding they need.

MANCHIN, CAPITO LEAD BIPARTISAN EFFORT TO EXTEND FUNDING FOR COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTERS

Community health centers provide affordable health care to our nation’s most vulnerable citizens. More than 29 million patients, including 385,000 veterans and 8.7 million children, receive quality medical, dental, vision, and behavioral health care services from a community health center. These centers work to combat the opioid epidemic, offer preventive care to patients, and treat chronic conditions to improve the health of those they serve while saving taxpayer dollars. On average, health centers save over $2,300 per Medicaid patient and save the health care system $24 billion each year.
