MANCHIN APPLAUDS GROUNDBREAKING OF FACEBOOK'S FIBER PROJECT IN WEST VIRGINIA

The groundbreaking of Facebook’s project to install fiber in West Virginia is one way for West Virginians to connect our communities. While I am disappointed that Facebook did not choose West Virginia as a site for one of their new data centers, I’ve continued to meet with Facebook about the issues we face in rural America, like access to the reliable broadband all West Virginians deserve and the sale of illegal drugs like opioids on Facebook’s platforms. As a member of the Appropriations committee, I have advocated for West Virginia to receive more funding for broadband so that we can build on recent investments by the tech industry in the state. Over the past several years, technology companies have begun to realize the importance of investing in West Virginia, which is why I recently convened a meeting between Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) Co-Chair Tim Thomas and tech companies in the state to underscore this growing sector of the state’s economy. I look forward to seeing more jobs and investments from companies into our great state and will continue to work to bring them to West Virginia.

MANCHIN SPEAKS AT WEST VIRGINIA BROADCASTERS ASSOCIATION MEETING WITH FCC CHAIRMAN PAI ON RURAL BROADBAND COVERAGE

In 1935 President Franklin D. Roosevelt created the rural electrification program to bring electricity to communities across America. In 2019, the fight to bring reliable broadband to rural communities across the nation is just as important. Without access to the internet, citizens can’t learn, apply for jobs, run businesses, or give back to their communities. The sad fact is that many places in West Virginia simply do not have access to reliable broadband and the lack of access affects West Virginians every day. Thank you to the West Virginia Broadcasters Association for inviting Chairman Pai to join us in West Virginia and to FCC Chairman Pai for joining us today.

MANCHIN SENDS LETTER TO RICHARD BRANSON ADVOCATING FOR VIRGIN ONE TO BUILD CERTIFICATION AND TEST CENTER IN WEST VIRGINIA

The letter said in part, “I recently met with your team from Virgin Hyperloop One that is working to build the certification center and test facility for your company’s hyperloop technology in the United States. I came away from the meeting convinced that this is a giant leap forward into the future of transportation, an engine that will change the way we travel and transform the national landscape. I am just as convinced that my state of West Virginia is the partner you are seeking to make this a reality. You have set forth an aggressive schedule for construction of the test site and certification, and I strongly believe that West Virginia can move Virgin Hyperloop One through complete testing to full operational capability more efficiently than anywhere else.”

MANCHIN, COLLINS APPLAUD PASSAGE OF RESOLUTION TO DEDICATE NOVEMBER AS NATIONAL HOMELESS CHILDREN AND YOUTH AWARENESS MONTH

In West Virginia there are more than 10,500 homeless students and across the nation there were 1.3 million homeless children and youth in the 2016-2017 school year. This is an unfortunate and unacceptable situation we are facing as a state and nation. This resolution highlights the issue of child and youth homelessness and supports the efforts of businesses, organizations, educators and volunteers that are dedicated to meeting the needs of homeless children and youth. I am proud to have worked with my colleague Senator Collins and our colleagues on both sides of the aisle to pass this resolution and look forward to working together in the future to continue to address this issue.

MANCHIN STATEMENT ON MLB PROPOSAL TO ELIMINATE MINOR LEAGUE TEAMS IN WEST VIRGINIA

I will do everything I can to protect minor league baseball in West Virginia because many of these teams have been pillars of the community for decades. I’m contacting everyone I know in the MLB to ask them to consider the consequences of scrapping our local teams. Our national pastime has a rich history in West Virginia, and for generations, minor league baseball has brought our communities together and introduced countless youth to the sport. They need to understand the negative economic impact that this will have on our communities and that West Virginians have a true love for the game.

MANCHIN COMMITTEE PASSES BILLS TO PERMANENTLY FUND LWCF AND ADDRESS NATIONAL PARKS BACKLOG

I am tremendously proud of the bipartisan work we conducted today on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee. We passed permanent, mandatory funding for the LWCF so that we can continue to invest in our public lands at both the state and federal level. We also passed legislation that would begin addressing the National Park Service backlog of deferred maintenance projects. The infrastructure projects that will be funded through this bill are critical to protecting many of our national treasures, and like the LWCF funding, will provide a significant benefit to the outdoor recreation economy.

I think Mr. Brouillette is up to the task. As a father of nine, he’s bound to be a skilled manager. He has a long history with energy issues and with the Department of Energy, and, very importantly, he’s visited NETL in Morgantown, WV, on more than one occasion. He has served as the staff director of the House Energy and Commerce Committee. At the Department, he’s served as an Assistant Secretary of Energy during the Bush Administration and, of course, as the Deputy Secretary for the past two years. He knows the Department, knows Congress, and knows the energy issues facing our nation. He has also demonstrated his managerial skills as a Vice President of Ford Motor Company and as the Senior Vice President of USAA, the insurance and financial services giant that serves members of our military and their families. This Committee has favorably reported, and the Senate has confirmed Dan twice before. Overall, I think the President has chosen wisely in nominating Dan for the top job, and I am pleased to support his nomination.

MANCHIN, CAPITO ANNOUNCE HUD FUNDING FOR MARION COUNTY

Everyone, no matter their circumstances, deserves to have a roof over their head. Access to affordable housing helps individuals to get back on their feet and gives them a hand up, not a hand out so they have the opportunity to contribute to their communities. As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee I am proud that West Virginia is receiving this funding, and I will continue to fight to ensure that everyone has a roof over their head and a place to sleep.

ON THE ROAD

I was honored to speak at the Small Communities, Big Solutions Conference with our Southern West Virginia higher education community. We have so much opportunity in the southern part of our state and I’m hopeful that we can create much-needed jobs.

This week, FCC chairman Ajit Pai and I attended a meeting with the WV Broadcasters Association, where I stressed the importance of rural broadband coverage. This lack of access affects West Virginians every single day. So far, I have sent more than 100 speed test letters submitted by constituents from across WV lacking access to broadband to Chairman Pai. I was grateful for the opportunity to Skype with Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School students and congratulate Brian Allman, who recently received the prestigious Milken Educator Award.

Regional Coordinator Michael Garcia delivered replacement World War II medals to Ms. Brenda Welch of Lost Creek. Ms. Welch had contacted my office for assistance in obtaining her late father’s World War II replacement medals. Caseworker Sylvia Asbury worked with Ms. Welch during the process. I am proud to join Ms. Welch and all Americans in recognizing Kenneth Swiger's noble service and sacrifice.

Representative JoBeth Delawder provided information about services my office can assist with, and also helped serve dinner to the families of those about to deploy with the West Virginia National Guard.

Mr. Kestner from Valley Grove, West Virginia, contacted the Senator's office requesting assistance with his Social Security disability claim. He had been denied twice in the past for his disability. Caseworker Gerrie Greene contacted the SSA ODAR office and requested a hearing date for Mr. Kestner. His hearing date was scheduled for October 29, however, SSA notified Mr. Kestner on October 10 that his disability was approved and his monthly payments will be process by the payment center.

Economic Injury Disaster Loan Availability Announcement

The U.S. Small Business Administration is reminding small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small businesses engaged in aquaculture and most private nonprofit organizations that Dec. 10 is the filing deadline for federal economic injury disaster loans in West Virginia as a result of the combined effects of excessive rain, flash flooding, Hurricane Florence and Hurricane Michael from April 1 through Dec. 31, 2018.

The loans are available in the following counties: Braxton, Cabell, Calhoun, Clay, Doddridge, Fayette, Gilmer, Greenbrier, Jackson, Kanawha, Lewis, Mason, Nicholas, Pleasants, Pocahontas, Putnam, Randolph, Ritchie, Roane, Tyler, Upshur, Webster, Wirt and Wood in West Virginia.

Social Security Phone Scam - Learn How to Protect Yourself

Social Security employees do occasionally contact people--generally those who have ongoing business with the agency--by telephone for business purposes. However, Social Security employees will never threaten a person or promise a Social Security benefit approval, or increase, in exchange for information. In those cases, the call is fraudulent and people should not engage with the caller. If a person receives these calls, he or she should report the information to the OIG Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271 or online at https://oig.ssa.gov/report.

Social Security has recently worked with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the Federal Trade Commission to create a new fraud prevention placemat to help you avoid Social Security scams. You can order free copies of the placemat to use at dining venues, or to share with friends and family. The placemat is in English on one side and Spanish on the other side.
