MANCHIN VOTES TO KEEP GOVERNMENT OPEN, DEMANDS ACTION ON MINERS FIX BY DECEMBER 31

Although, I voted to pass this short-term spending bill, I’m disappointed it did not include the Bipartisan American Miners Act. If we don’t pass this bill this year, 13,000 miners will lose their healthcare and 92,000 will see their pensions slashed. I will not let this happen. I will do everything I can to get this fix into the spending bill we’ll need to pass on December 20. I won’t allow hardworking miners and their families to lose the healthcare and pensions they have earned, they have paid for, and they deserve.

MANCHIN STATEMENT ON 51ST ANNIVERSARY OF THE FARMINGTON MINE DISASTER

It was November 1968 when Farmington No. 9 exploded. My uncle, neighbor and several high school classmates were in the mine at the time of the explosion. For days everyone I had ever known sat around the company store waiting for updates about the fate of our loved ones. The look on my mother’s face when she found out her younger brother lost his life in that mine will stay with me forever.

Fifty-one years later, we continue to grieve, remember those we lost and pray for their families. I have always said that even one life lost while on the job is one too many. It is simply not acceptable to me that any of our miners fail to return home to family and loved ones at the end of a shift. Since my time as Governor, I have been dedicated to improving safety conditions in our mines, so that tragedies like these and others, never happen again. I hope today that every West Virginian will remember the 78 miners that died that day and pray for their families.

MANCHIN COMMITTEE PASSES BILLS TO PERMANENTLY FUND LWCF AND ADDRESS NATIONAL PARKS BACKLOG

I am tremendously proud of the bipartisan work we conducted today on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee. We passed permanent, mandatory funding for the LWCF so that we can continue to invest in our public lands at both the state and federal level. We also passed legislation that would begin addressing the National Park Service backlog of deferred maintenance projects. The infrastructure projects that will be funded through this bill are critical to protecting many of our national treasures, and like the LWCF funding, will provide a significant benefit to the outdoor recreation economy.

MANCHIN, SULLIVAN INTRODUCE BILL TO ADDRESS VETERANS' BURN PIT EXPOSURE

We’ve made a promise to the men and women who have bravely fought to defend our nation, often in harsh conditions, that when they return home we take care of them. West Virginians have seen first-hand how long it’s taken for the Vietnam-era Veterans who were exposed to toxic chemicals like Agent Orange to receive the care and benefits they deserve, and the toll it took on them and their families. I want to make sure that doesn’t happen to this generation of Veterans. That’s why my colleague Senator Sullivan and I introduced The Veterans Burn Pit Exposure Recognition Act to make it easier for Veterans exposed to open-air burn pits in the Middle East and Afghanistan to apply for care and benefits. I look forward to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to continue our commitment to the patriotic men and women in uniform and I thank them every day for their service.

MANCHIN CONGRATULATES PERFECT NORTH SLOPES ON ACQUIRING TIMBERLINE RESORT

I called CEO Chip Perfect to congratulate him and am thrilled to see that Perfect North Slopes has bought the Timberline Four Seasons Resort. I wish them good luck in the 2020 ski season, and offered my assistance with any federal issues that may arise. Reopening the resort will allow West Virginians to continue to enjoy the long tradition of skiing in our beautiful mountains, and bring thousands of visitors to the region, boosting our economy and giving us new opportunities to showcase our Wild and Wonderful West Virginia.

MANCHIN APPLAUDS WVU AND VIRGIN HYPERLOOP ONE MEETING TO DISCUSS BUILDING THEIR CERTIFICATION AND TEST CENTER IN WEST VIRGINIA

It is great to see WVU and Virgin Hyperloop One meet about the possibility of Virgin Hyperloop One building their certification and test center in West Virginia. I believe that the relationship between West Virginia and Virgin Hyperloop One could be incredibly strong and that our great state has exactly what they’re looking for in a location. I look forward to working with WVU and Virgin Hyperloop One to advocate for this partnership and will do whatever I can to make this a reality for West Virginia.

MANCHIN STATEMENT ON MLB PROPOSAL TO ELIMINATE MINOR LEAGUE TEAMS IN WEST VIRGINIA

I will do everything I can to protect minor league baseball in West Virginia because many of these teams have been pillars of the community for decades. I’m contacting everyone I know in the MLB to ask them to consider the consequences of scrapping our local teams. Our national pastime has a rich history in West Virginia, and for generations, minor league baseball has brought our communities together and introduced countless youth to the sport. They need to understand the negative economic impact that this will have on our communities and that West Virginians have a true love for the game.

MANCHIN WELCOMES POCAHONTAS COUNTY TEACHER TO TESTIFY AT SENATE ENR HEARING

Senator Manchin welcomed, Justin Dilley, to the Energy & Natural Resources Committee. Justin, a teacher from Pocahontas County, testified on the importance of the Secure Rural Schools program to students and teachers in states like West Virginia. The hearing also examined the importance of “Payments in Lieu of Taxes” (PILT) to counties that play host to federal lands. Manchin noted, “I’d like to recognize Justin Dilley, Justin’s from Pocahontas County. He’s a high school science teacher in my home state of West Virginia. Thank you, Justin, for being here, and I understand Justin’s students back in West Virginia, in Pocahontas County, are watching, are watching us live this morning. And I would like to say hello to all of them and remind them that they have a great teacher in you, Justin. I know they already know that. I happen to be married to a teacher myself, and I understand the work and sacrifices that all of you put into this job—a labor of love. On behalf of me and my wife Gayle, I want to thank both you and your wife for your commitment and service to helping our next generation of West Virginians prepare to succeed in life.

MANCHIN, CAPITO ANNOUNCE MORE THAN $6 MILLION FOR EASTERN PANHANDLE TRANSIT AUTHORITY

I am glad to see that efforts to improve and develop our public transportation infrastructure across West Virginia are being supported by the DOT through this funding. This program addresses the public transportation challenges we face in West Virginia, and will create more economic development for our state. As a member of the Transportation Appropriations Subcommittee, I will continue to fight for funding that will improve access to public transportation in our state.

MANCHIN, CAPITO ANNOUNCE FUNDING FOR TELEHEALTH, ONLINE EDUCATION

Rural communities like those across West Virginia have unique challenges when it comes to accessing education and healthcare services. We must do everything we can to make sure all West Virginians have the resources they need. This funding will help West Virginia bridge that gap and provide quality education and healthcare services to even the most rural West Virginians through telehealth services. As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I will continue to fight for funding that benefits our children and all West Virginians.

MANCHIN, CAPITO ANNOUNCE MORE THAN $52 MILLION FOR REBUILDING OF HERBERT HOOVER HIGH SCHOOL WHICH WAS DAMAGED BY THE 2016 FLOOD

I am thankful FEMA is finally giving West Virginia the funds we need to rebuild Herbert Hoover High School. After the terrible flooding that ravaged West Virginia and killed 23 people, we came together as a state and helped each other rebuild. It was incredible to see the strength of West Virginians and the compassion they held for each other. I have continually worked with both FEMA and the Fish and Wildlife Service to ensure school rebuilds across West Virginia remain a priority. This has included working collaboratively with FEMA Region III Administrator MaryAnn Tierney, Secretary of the Interior David Bernhardt, and local officials including Kanawha County Superintendent Dr. Ron Duerring. This funding will help the Elkview community feel whole again and will get our kids back into their school so that they have the best possible learning environment. I look forward to seeing the new Herbert Hoover High School and will continue to help the other schools in West Virginia receive their funding to rebuild and recover from the 2016 flood.

MANCHIN, CAPITO ANNOUNCE MORE THAN $49 MILLION FOR RURAL WATER INFRASTRUCTURE

Investing in infrastructure is critical to maintaining a clean water supply for all of our residents, especially those who live in the rural areas of our state. These investments will help expand drinking water containment and wastewater treatment systems so that all West Virginians have access to clean water and sanitation, no matter where they live. West Virginia needs billions of dollars in water infrastructure investment. These awards are just a drop in the bucket, but every bit counts. That’s why, as a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I will continue to fight for funding that supports resources for communities across West Virginia.

Sharing Your Blessings This Thanksgiving

As we gather around the dinner table this Thanksgiving, it is important for us to reflect on the great blessings we share as West Virginians and Americans. It is easy to forget how blessed we are to live in a country with the greatest liberties and freedoms in the world, but Thanksgiving is the one day each year that the entire American “family” gathers together to give thanks for the blessings we enjoy. Year after year, we come together no matter what is happening in the life of our country – whether in war or peace, in boom or bust, in triumph or tragedy – and that is something truly unique and special about who we are as Americans.

Growing up in Farmington, I was always taught that if you can count your blessings, you can share your blessings. This important message and my family’s dedication to helping those in need has stuck with me throughout my adult life and has always inspired me to believe in public service and give back to my community.

While we gather together among family and friends, let us never take for granted one of America’s greatest blessings: the men and women of our Armed Forces who stand guard around the world, preserving our freedom and protecting us from harm day in and day out. As Gayle and I sit around our table this Thanksgiving, we will offer a special thanks for their service and sacrifice, and pray that each one of our brave service members safely returns home to their family, friends and loved ones.

Throughout this holiday season, I encourage all West Virginians to pause and truly give thanks for the many blessings we enjoy each day by sharing those blessings with those in need. One of my most cherished traditions is serving wonderful Thanksgiving meals to the less fortunate members of our community alongside my wife Gayle and many tireless volunteers. Through this work of helping others, I am always reminded the true meaning of Thanksgiving.

Despite daily struggles we may encounter, we are all blessed to live in this wonderful country. I am thankful each day for the opportunity to represent the great state of West Virginia. On behalf of Gayle and our family, we wish you and your family a happy and healthy Thanksgiving. God bless America, and God bless our great state of West Virginia.

I'm so glad I had the opportunity to talk to Ripley High School students via Skype last week. These students had great questions and I am thankful we had the opportunity to discuss the issues that matter to them.

Congratulations to AHF Products, formerly Armstrong Flooring, on the ribbon cutting for the 85,000-foot expansion of its Beverly facility, allowing for the creation of 50 new jobs. I helped secure $2.5 million from the U.S. EDA for this project and I wish them the very best for many more years of excellence.

Mr. Daniel Pridmore, Jr. of Bomont contacted the Senator's office because stopped receiving his monthly social security benefit check following the passing of his wife. He had contacted the SSA office and his bank multiple times to try and clear up the error, but had gone three months with no check. Senior Caseworker Cris Hewett contacted the manager of the Charleston SSA Field Office who worked with Mr. Pridemore’s bank to correct the depositing error and ensured that his past payments were made and his monthly benefits reinstated.

Economic Injury Disaster Loan Availability Announcement

The U.S. Small Business Administration announced that Economic Injury Disaster Loans are available to small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small businesses engaged in aquaculture and private nonprofit organizations located in Mingo County, West Virginia, as a result of drought beginning Oct. 15, 2019.

"This county is eligible because it is contiguous to one or more primary counties in Kentucky. The Small Business Administration recognizes that disasters do not usually stop at county or state lines. For that reason, counties adjacent to primary counties named in the declaration are included," said Kem Fleming, director of SBA’s Field Operations Center East.

Social Security Phone Scam - Learn How to Protect Yourself

Social Security employees do occasionally contact people--generally those who have ongoing business with the agency--by telephone for business purposes. However, Social Security employees will never threaten a person or promise a Social Security benefit approval, or increase, in exchange for information. In those cases, the call is fraudulent and people should not engage with the caller. If a person receives these calls, he or she should report the information to the OIG Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271 or online at https://oig.ssa.gov/report.

Social Security has recently worked with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the Federal Trade Commission to create a new fraud prevention placemat to help you avoid Social Security scams. You can order free copies of the placemat to use at dining venues, or to share with friends and family. The placemat is in English on one side and Spanish on the other side.
