SENATE PASSES MANCHIN VA ACCOUNTABILITY LEGISLATION

"While a great majority of VA doctors provide the very best of care, the system can be ruined by a few bad apples and it’s our duty to protect Veterans from these dangerous doctors. I originally cosponsored this bill in response to a 2017 GAO report that showed an alarming pattern of concealing poor care and major mistakes within the VA. I am proud to have joined my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to pass this important bill because we need to hold all our medical professionals accountable,” said Senator Manchin. “While I appreciate the efforts that the VA has made to correct this on their own, they are not enough. Now that our bill has passed, strict guidelines will be implemented to assure our Veterans they are receiving the highest quality of care.”

MANCHIN STATEMENT ON QASEM SOLEIMANI

“Make no mistake, Qasem Soleimani was a terrorist who did not value human life. He was a persistent threat to American troops and regional stability. As leader of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard’s Quds Force, he was responsible for the deaths of hundreds of American service members in Iraq, wounding thousands more, and also coordinating attacks against our interests. Under Soleimani’s leadership, the IRGC taught militants in Iraq how to build some of the deadliest roadside bombs aimed at American troops. Further, he was a longtime supporter of despots like Syria’s Bashar Al-Assad and terrorist organizations like Hezbollah.

“However, Congress cannot be left in the dark on operations of this magnitude, and the Administration must brief Congress on what imminent threat made it necessary to take him out now. I urge Administration officials to brief all members of Congress so we may better understand the circumstances surrounding the strike, potential retaliation scenarios, and the US government’s next steps in deescalating conflict in the region, both militarily and diplomatically.”

MANCHIN INTRODUCES BIPARTISAN LEGISLATION TO IMPROVE BROADBAND ACCESS FOR RURAL STUDENTS

“This bipartisan legislation would allow a portion of Secure Rural Schools funding to be used to expand broadband access in rural counties across our country. This is an important step towards eliminating the “homework gap” and ensuring every student has access to the Internet when they leave school – whether on a school bus, at a library, or at home,” Senator Manchin said.

MANCHIN STATEMENT ON THE 14TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE SAGO MINE DISASTER

“Fourteen years ago, twelve coal miners went to work at the Sago mine and never returned to their families. After that tragedy, I joined all West Virginians as we grieved with the coal miners’ families and loved ones. Today and every day since that horrible disaster, my thoughts are with those who lost a loved one that day. After the Sago disaster, West Virginia passed historic legislation to improve safety standards for our coal miners who power America. Today’s anniversary is a reminder that our coal miners health, safety, and security must continue to be our highest priority. I remain committed to ensuring no family has to suffer this unimaginable loss ever again and continue to keep the coal miners’ families in my thoughts.”

MANCHIN STATEMENT ON THE DEATH OF RAYMOND L. STARKEY AT MARSHALL COUNTY MINE

“Gayle and I send our deepest sympathies to Raymond L. Starkey’s family and loved ones and we, along with all West Virginians, will keep them in our prayers during this difficult time. Our coal miners risk their lives every day to power our nation and we are forever grateful for their sacrifices and contributions to our great country. It is difficult to hear of someone so young leaving us too soon, especially during this special time of year. This is truly a tragic loss for all of West Virginia.”

MANCHIN ANNOUNCES MORE THAN $600K FOR RENEWABLE ENERGY INVESTMENTS

“By investing in renewable generation and energy efficiency, this funding will help reduce energy use and cut energy costs for businesses and families across West Virginia while bringing climate solutions to the Mountain State. This funding will also help create new jobs, boosting economic development and improving the lives of all residents and businesses in our state. As Ranking Member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, I will continue to fight for resources like this because I’m committed to ensuring West Virginians are included in the energy economy of the future,” said Senator Manchin.

MANCHIN SECURES FUNDING FOR WEST VIRGINIA PRIORITIES IN FY 2020 APPROPRIATIONS PACKAGE

“One of my greatest responsibilities as a Senator is advocating for West Virginia through my position on the Appropriations Committee. The funding secured for West Virginia in the Appropriations package makes me proud of the work we have accomplished in the Senate this year. We have secured $3.8 billion to combat the opioid epidemic, $555 million to expand broadband in rural areas like West Virginia, $181.5 million to address youth homelessness, and I am so proud to say that we secured pensions for 92,000 coal miners and healthcare for 13,000 coal miners and their families in this package. All of these wins are wonderful for West Virginia and I look forward to continuing to fight to ensure that our state receives the funding and resources we need to thrive and succeed,” said Senator Manchin.

YEAR IN REVIEW: MANCHIN SECURES MORE THAN $667 MILLION IN FUNDING FOR WEST VIRGINIA IN 2019

"As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I fight every day to make sure West Virginia receives the funding we need to support our communities. The awards this year include funding for priorities like the combatting opioid epidemic and improve health services for rural communities, with additional funding to provide resources to homeless children across our state,” said Senator Manchin. “I also worked to ensure these grants included investments in education and economic development, infrastructure awards to improve our roads, and highways and airports in order to better connect rural West Virginians and improve tourism for our state. One of my biggest priorities is ensuring that West Virginia receives the funding and support we need. I’m excited to see the positive impact this funding has in our communities and will continue to advocate for West Virginia.”

MANCHIN, CAPITO ANNOUNCE FUNDING FOR THE HIVE IN BECKLEY

"I am proud that the EDA is investing in Southern West Virginia through the New River Gorge Regional Development Authority’s HIVE initiative,” Senator Manchin said. “This funding will allow HIVE to continue to their business advisory and technical assistance services to small businesses and entrepreneurs, potentially creating and retaining nearly 350 jobs while also establishing a co-work and maker space for the HIVE. I look forward to seeing the economic opportunity this funding provides to our state. West Virginians are some of the hardest workers and when you invest in West Virginia, we return it tenfold."

“I firmly believe that every child in West Virginia deserves access to a quality education no matter their background or location which is why I’m proud to announce this funding, because it is critical to every community throughout West Virginia from the coalfields to the panhandles. Through programs like Head Start, children can gain essential skills and knowledge needed to be successful throughout their education. As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I am proud to secure funding for Head Start programs in West Virginia that support our students and our education system. Just this week, I voted to increase Head Start funding by $550 million dollars and I look forward to continuing to advocate for programs like Head Start,” said Senator Manchin.

“West Virginia was hit by flooding in February 2018 that destroyed homes, displaced many West Virginians from their jobs, and caused over $22 million in public infrastructure damage. But these floods made West Virginia come together to support one another in the middle of a tragedy, and it was incredible to see the kindness and hope West Virginians gave one another. While our communities are still recovering from these disasters, this funding will help workers find jobs and expand their experience so that they can get back to work and give back to their communities. I will continue to fight for West Virginia to receive funding so that we can fully recover from these terrible floods,” said Senator Manchin.

“I am proud to see West Virginia based organizations participating in innovative ways to address the opioid epidemic that has ravaged our state. The effect of this epidemic on our communities is evident all across West Virginia. Witnessing expecting mothers and newborns within these communities struggling with substance abuse is especially heartbreaking. But I believe that as a state that has been hit hardest by the opioid crisis, we will lead the rest of the nation in combatting this epidemic through programs like this. I look forward to seeing the results of this demonstration model and the effectiveness in combatting this terrible crisis,” said Senator Manchin.
